This month, I'll teach an island-style version of "What a Wonderful World"
In preparation for our Island Vibes Jam next Saturday (more details on that coming soon!), I wanted to choose a song that would allow us to work on island reggae strum variations. The basic strum is the backbeat strum, and we'll add rhythmic variations with muting and chucking for additional challenge. Iz's medley version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World" is played with an island reggae strum, and I haven't had a chance to teach that version yet, so here it is! I've merged Iz's version with a dash of my jazz version (as heard on my album Ukulele Days, which I taught to Patrons back in 2017, click here for that lesson, and watch my San Francisco class perform it).
This island version is more upbeat, which I really like. I shared my arrangement of this song in my 5@5 Live show last night - and Instagram has finally made it possible for me to post the 5@5 for easy playback (hurrah!). You can click here to watch my 5@5 live show, I play "What a Wonderful World" just after the 11-minute mark.
A note about our monthly Live Lessons
My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.
I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)
