In Victoria it was a class thing. Much of the populace in that state employed by the government, or indirectly subsidised via government payments to unions- especially the notorious CFMEU. This segment of the populace was not overly concerned or damaged by being told to stay at home on great pay, by a government that couldn't organise a handshake in a brothel, let alone deal with a pandemic. Easier just to lock everyone up. The tax paying self employed business people were another story... totally smashed.

Revisiting this — aging like fine wine. An important episode!

MTH

JPN really nailing my tween/early teen years with his latest selections. I read the book recently and it was quite gripping.

Since our tastes on such similar wavelengths this season, can I suggest The Sheik, both the bestselling 1921 book and the silent film starring Valentino? A woman is kidnapped by a Sheik and raped every night until she eventually falls in love with him. I think it says so much about 20th century feminine tastes.

Miriam Carothers

Oooooh! Houellebecq is my fave!!!!

Nick

So far this season has been amazing

Sash

Scary stuff guys!!! 😝

Louie Fillet

Love the intro! I now want to live in a French castle

Sash

I honestly live for this show. You bring considerable light to my life. I’ve heard Anna K. talk about this literary theorist who spoke of how art exists to elevate the mundane. Your show, without any momentary hesitation, does that for me. As it seems, it does that for many others. Jack, you’re an absolutely fascinating person. I’m overjoyed to have listened to that Kantbot dude mention your name repeatedly on the Red Scare episode or I likely wouldn’t have found you. You’re one of the few genuine enthusiasts I can name, entirely free from irony. ❤️

Fotini Kaim

This is the perfect episode.

Matt Burgess

Jack have you ever seen the Australian miniseries/soap opera “Return to Eden”? I think you’ll really like it, it was our attempt at Dallas/Dynasty but with crocodiles https://youtu.be/pVTWPIF-mV8

I suspect that the Aussies capitulated to the woke turn of their neoliberal government out of gratitude for keeping immigrants out.

One of your best eps, fantastic guest. I’d love to hear you and Bayou discuss more French lit, possibly Georges Bataille’s Story of the Eye… xoxo

Just got my Neandertal perfume in the mail (I got “Them” kinda bc of the name) & I absolutely LOVE it. The whole package & messaging is so incredible. Gives me renewed excitement about the realm of physical objects. Thank you so much for enriching my life with all this secret luxury art dissidence.
