One thing about diabetes is that it was VERY glamorous for tween/teen girls in the 80s. The Babysitters Club had a character with diabetes and she was the thin, blond, pretty one from New York who was extremely sophisticated. I know more than a few women of a certain age who pretended to have diabetes back in the 80s/90s as tweens because of Stacy from the Babysitters Club books. I haven't seen the new Babysitters Club because it looks like lib garbage but the original books were very aspirational. Claudia was exotic and arty, Kristy was the bossy tomboy type I go for irl, Mary Anne was gentle and bookish, Stacy was glamorous and sophisticated, and Dawn was exotic (from California) and blond.
