NOW, VOYAGER (1942) ❤️ First Time Watching 🎬 Movie Reaction

Join me for my first time watching Now, Voyager. I hope you enjoy the video, my reaction, commentary and review! "Now, Voyager" is a classic 1942 romantic drama that follows the transformative journey of Charlotte Vale, played by Bette Davis, a repressed and emotionally scarred woman dominated by her controlling mother. After a nervous breakdown, she finds solace in the care of a compassionate psychiatrist who encourages her to embrace life and love. As she embarks on a cruise, Charlotte discovers her true self and a passionate romance with a married man, leading to profound personal growth and self-discovery. This timeless tale beautifully explores themes of freedom, love, and the pursuit of happiness against the backdrop of societal expectations. Perfect for a heartfelt movie reaction! A true grown-up romantic love story. I'm proud of your appreciation of this work of art.

Your expression of pure contented bliss in the thumbnail is the reason these classic old gems will always be cherished. Thank you, Mr. Mackley-Smith! Now, on to the reaction... ☺️

Bette Davis was great at troubled, complex characters, which leaves me to wonder "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane"

Very well observed, Dawn. This movie was ahead of its time in its frank, de stigmatizing portrayal of mental health issues and therapy. The author of “Now, Voyager” herself had suffered two nervous breakdowns, and based the kindly sanitarium doctor on a pioneering psychiatrist who had treated her during her own stay at a sanitarium.

Dawn, “Now, Voyager” is an example of cinematic melodrama., a genre I’d LOVE you to explore further. The word has a negative connotation today, but it was a legitimate genre in the Golden Era of Hollywood, with many great films that are highly regarded by critics and filmmakers. If you’re someone who can enjoy romances, there are a number of melodramas I recommend.., A very famous, influential and beloved melodrama is “AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER.” There are two versions. I recommend the 1957 version with Cary Grant, which is heavily referenced in the modern rom com “Sleepless In Seattle.” I especially recommend “BRIEF ENCOUNTER,” the classic British film by the great director David Lean. It is an absolute gem of a film, a little masterpiece that shows just how great the genre can be. I also love an early, lesser known melodrama called “WATERLOO BRIDGE.” It stars a very young Vivien Leigh (she was the star of “GONE WITH THE WIND.” ) Speaking of which, I actually can’t remember if you’ve reacted to “GONE WITH THE WIND” yet, but if not, what the heck are you waiting for? “GONE WITH THE WIND” is not only a great melodrama but is widely (and justifiably) considered the greatest film of all time. Definitely get to that one, if nothing else, if you haven’t already.

Thank you, Mr. Mackley-Smith, for your outstanding selection. It is so nice to see our Dawn Marie smiling and laughing after all of those so-so zombie movies this month. So now that the field of mid 1900's Rom-Coms has been established as one of her favorites (after her compulsory "I sooo confused" moment), what's next? I smell a poll coming on!!!

Patreot

Oh, almost forgot…. Bette Davis stars in the great, highly regarded masterpiece “ALL ABOUT EVE.” It’s truly a must watch.

Allen Bond

When I was able to have a similar movie be watched by another reactor, their fans started accusing me of trying to promote marriage cheating. Kudos to you! and Dawn, for the great reaction!

Louis Marzullo

But not yet, since Halloween is over. At least a few other B.D.'s should be seen before that one. ☺️ Stepping into someone else's lane here but I don't think he'll mind. 😆

Louis Marzullo

And didn't the mom say that Charlotte was about as sick as a "molting canary"? Hmm...

Elliot Nesterman

These days such films are usually called "Romantic Drama," melodrama being generally reserved for more OTT films and plays. One of my favorites is "Penny Serenade" (1941) with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. Grant was nominated for Best Actor. Gets me every time. "An Affair to Remember" is considered one of the most romantic films ever made. "Brief Encounter" is sheer genius. Directed by David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai), with a screenplay by Noel Coward ( adapted from his one-act play "Still Life"), and with an astonishing performance by Celia Johnson, it is a breathtaking film. In 1999 BFI ranked it the second greatest British film of all time (First was "The Third Man"). In 2017 a "Time Out" poll ranked it the 12th greatest British film ever.

Elliot Nesterman

The music is so evocative. Not only Max Steiner's beautiful _Now, Voyager_ theme, but also the occasional music. When Charlotte meets Jerry at the cocktail party before the concert the pianist is playing Cole Porter's "Night and Day." Here's the first stanza: Night and day You are the one, Only you beneath the moon and under the sun. Whether near to me or far, It's no matter, Darling, where you are, I think of you, Night and day. Here're Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga in a duet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZO0FyqGN2Q At the concert the orchestra is playing the first movement of Tchaikovsky's first symphony, called the _Pathétique._ In French _Pathétique_ doesn't mean pathetic in the English sense. It means something that arouses intense emotion. So as well as being a beautiful piece, it is a perfect expression of what must be going on inside them.

Louis Marzullo

Speaking of The Third Man... been hawking that one to Dawn (as well as All About Eve) for a few years now. I know someone sent her the DVD. Hope her interest is *really* piqued now!

"Every day I choose not to have a nervous breakdown" - Dawn Marie Anderson, October, 2024. Bloody brilliant! 🤣 I smell a MEME!!!

Datsmeharse

Yayyyy, the lass got me name right. Glad she didn't leave out the H.

Dodsworth comes to mind as a movie where infidelity is handled in a relatively moral way (at least for one of the partners) I always wanted Dawn's view on that one because of her previous comments on marriage, but this one works just as well. Great suggesion.
