Marcus Junius Brutus [Heroic Spirit]
The Last Voice of the Republic
The man who killed Gaius Julius Caesar.
A Roman senator, a politician who stood for the Republic’s democracy in the days shortly before its final evolution into an empire.
Originally a friend of Julius Caesar, Brutus came to oppose him during several critical moments, and even sided with Pompey during the civil war that inevitably decided the fate of the nation. However, afterwards, Caesar granted him amnesty in recognition of their friendship, and Brutus continued to remain a senator.
As Julius Caesar accrued more and more power, their relationship continued to fray. The point of reconciliation was passed, and Brutus and several other senators, calling themselves “Liberatores,” conspired to bring about Julius Caesar’s death. It was their desperate attempt to retake the democracy that was dying around them with every passing day.
Taking up a dagger, these conspirators set about to kill Caesar, and on the Ides of March, Brutus committed his final act of betrayal and slew his friend.
However, the Republic wasn’t saved. For Brutus, it must have been the final insult, that despite his actions, Rome itself was destined to become an empire ruled by a single person’s will. His betrayal and Julius Caesar’s death only delayed the inevitable.
