Cannon Andrus

I’m obsessed with this show

kyle

you just made my night

Ethan

Excellent

psychotichonda

I was about to go to sleep but this is more important

thank u next

EPISODE 2. I SCREAMED 🔥🔥

Mobcujoh

Bro imagine if this was real 😳

Marcusinmilw

Welp, I was going to turn in early but this upload completely derailed that plan. Thanks, Geks! 😂

bateman bookworm

being an east coast gek is not for the weak

bateman bookworm

midday blessing of the seven😭😭yeah this is early for them! but still i was getting ready for bed when i got the notif, by the time i finish this they usually have another up

alex anderson

After only watching the intro, you don’t have to apologize for not knowing about the history behind the event beforehand, as there is a difference between being an idiot and being ill-informed. At least where I’m from, you only have one year of world history education, which doesn’t even cover this event usually, and if so then briefly, so I wouldn’t expect a lot of Americans to understand what happened, without going out on their own to understand the history. This isn’t American history, and this is an event that doesn’t really concern modern U.S. society in a general sense.

A_Daddy Daichi

yesss I'm so excited! Going to watch ep 3 after your reaction!

Mahti

Cannon nuclear fusion is still far away from being solved, but very recently they managed to make the first fusion that generated more energy than was used to trigger the fusion. You will certainly hear about it if they solve fusion, as it would basically unlock unlimited energy for humanity

Sean Johnson

Brig is COOKING about the terrifying bureaucracy of the USSR, At the height of the USSR, 1 in 5 of the population were informants for the STATE, meaning children would rat on their parents, neighbours would inform on neighbours to the KGB. The NKVD would do night raids and kidnap, torture or slave labour anyone deemed minutely non-loyal to the party. They literally created a society based on fear to step out of line... This is why even the Party leaders will only repeat what is deemed Party "Truths" because no-one wanted their family or themselves to disappear overnight

TheBookerDeWitt

Oh yeah, a little existential radioactive terror to cap off my Wednesday evening

Niffol

I cannot wait.

HNadR

I screamed "Zeke!" when I read "children would rat on their parents" 😭☠️

kyle

Brig, the helicopter actually hit the cable on the crane that caused it to crash. I also thought that the helicopter just stopped working on my first watch because of the radiation. This is the real life video of it which shows it better (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuNtgYtF4FI). Also, that ending scene is exactly why I've been saying in the poll posts that Chernobyl's sound design and tension building is second to none.

JC

You know it's getting tense when the geks aren't slapping each other 😂

jrnoodles

Thank you guys. I was not expecting the glaze over uncle ben in a chernobyl episode though

Bellamy Blake

Idk why but moments of this show are reminding me of the movie Deep Impact. Have any of you ever seen it? Elijah Wood stars in it.

打音玖珠

10:18 no way I was thinking the exact same thing

Enma

So real 😭 always late at night and in the middle of the week. But i cant lie, I like waking up and seeing 1-3 vids in my notis and being able to watch them back to back on my own time.

Niffol

I have a friend who works on helicopters, he said helos have alot of mechanical design to them and that makes them less prone to explode. idk tho /shrug

Huewi

Have you guys said the schedule for the show? If anybody knows could someone please inform me :)

Aozora

Im actually surprised that the truth got revealed. Usually in shows, the major truth is revealed near the end but here, we're only on the 2nd episode.

Joydan Bri’an

watched this with my dad when this show first came out and he was like 14 when it happened and when the news was coming to the u.s. Mind you that man remembers literally everything lmao so every second of every episode he was giving information on what happened and how the u.s. reacted to everything. I forgot everything he said since that was back in 2019 but being around when Chernobyl happened in real time is insane

William Glasgow

yall should watch Kyle Hill series on YouTube when done. he has a whole series on chernobyl then and now. plus all the other nuclear accidents in history

DudeTrue

The firefighter's clothes are still there in that basement. They're still too dangerous to be touched or even looked at without the proper protection.

alex anderson

There isn't really a schedule for this since it's so short, but the time between this and ep 1 was almost a week. So, expect a 1/2 - 1 week span between uploads.

Spencer

This show absolutely claps man.

Mr. Buddy Guy

I don’t know where but I remember seeing a quote that this situation could only happen in the Soviet Union and only the Soviet Union could fix it. Take that as you will.

DudeTrue

Here is an amazing fact: Aleksandr Yuvchenko (the man who cut himself holding the door to the reactor open) received what would be a lethal dose of radiation for most people. He spent an entire year in the Moscow hospital receiving constant blood and plasma transfusions. He survived until 2008, where at the age of 47 he finally succame to his leukemia. Some people are built different. He was a pretty big boi.

Shadow

This show is crazy - like so good. I was also ignorant and misinformed on this part of history. Still am but ready to learn more

TheSauceGuy

I'm so glad you guys are enjoying this show and that people recommended it.

EdEddandEddy_

“You are dealing with something that has never occurred on this planet before..” Earth is 4.5 billion years old. 😩😵‍💫🤯

TheSauceGuy

History is fascinating and should be taught in more depth in the US.

emma.bean

We start watching this show and then today I read this headline in the newspaper at the check out while getting groceries “Popular US hiking spot allegedly contaminated with radioactive waste comparable to Chernobyl”. 40 mins from my house. The hell…😳

Deirdre

Ep. 3, tomorrow…? 😁🤞

TheSauceGuy

It's not abnormal to be ignorant of certain parts of history (especially as an American lol). So many major events can happen in one place over the course of a year. You can't reliably keep track of it all while also retaining all of the information.

Shadow

Yea I agree - we talked about this just a little in my AP environmental class. My problem is I didnt really actually retain/learn much at all even if it was taught lmaooo. I’m the type to not study or pay attention and still get As. All the info I learned just went in one ear and out the other once the test was over💀 I’m unintentionally ignorant of a lot of American history I was taught and tested well on to lol

DudeTrue

If you want to know what the world might look like after a nuclear apocalypse, you can find a lot of great videos of people exploring Pripyat on YouTube. It's also a great example of what the world would look like after the rapture.

TheSauceGuy

Oh wow, I watched House of the Dragon after Chernobyl and forgot Larys' actor was in this.

DudeTrue

I can't stand the stuff with the animals. I really can't. That said, they chose to cut one scene involving a cat and I'm really sad that I looked it up what happens. I think seeing babies or pets suffer is so much because there's just no way that they can understand. They just want to be loved and cared for, and this is what's happening... and they just... it doesn't make any sense. It's too sad. Guys I'm sad.

Tiga

If you want to know what all the russian is translated you can look up the episode transcripts online! Like what the announcements made during the evacuation were saying. Haunting.

alee

This show was on my watch list for ages and I'm so glad this finally gave me the incentive I needed to watch it. Holy moly is it good. That ending gave me such visceral anxiety, screwwwww dark enclosed spaces (with guaranteed death nightmare fuel levels of radiation on top of it all blerrhghghhh). Also 400 rubles? Really??

Gaboxxy

"Fun" fact: those clothes are in that hospital basement to this day.

A_Daddy Daichi

Into the episode: It’s cool that Ulana’s character embodies so many scientists at the time getting together and trying to figure out how to stop the radiation from spreading. They knew they could get punished yet they still did it anyway. I liked that they did that!

danidelight

So glad you guys dropped this video before I have to fly out tomorrow morning. A fact about the military general, General Vladimir Pikalov, that drove the truck to get the dosimeter reading himself. He fought in the WW2 battles of Moscow and Stalingrad, and Kursk. Before Chernobyl, he had already led numerous successful liquidation and prevention efforts in other events. He took control of the cleanup effort for Chernobyl. The first time I watched this I got chills when the 3 men who stood up to volunteer said their names out loud, because you know those are the real names of those 3 heroes. This event was a tragic disaster, but in the face of it, many many heroes were made.

Tiga

Also reading the transcript versus seeing the show is really interesting. You get more of the subtext from the scenes. The way they describe Khomyuk in her first appearance, "There's iron in this woman" goes harddd

C2-H5-OH

@Carter I love the guy who plays Scherbina as well, but could you tell us from which show/movie you call him the GOAT?

TheSauceGuy

I was curious as to whether or not the pilots of the Mi-8 helicopter that crashed survived. I figured they didn't, but people have survived far worse (they did not survive). Regardless, in my search, I found a video of the helicopter crashing. It seems that in real life, this was months after the meltdown and had something to do with the building of the sarcophagus. Also, the helicopter didn't crash because of radiation (in the show or real life); its rotor blades broke after making contact with a cable. https://www.reddit.com/r/CatastrophicFailure/comments/146mbow/an_mi8_helicopter_crashing_over_the_core_of_the/

Jonathan Perez

The Days, is about the Fukushima plant after the tsunami. Is another good watch

TheSauceGuy

Brig, the word you asked about meant "attention." I only know this because of a game I played (set in Ukraine) lol. The Romanized form of the word (not using the Russian alphabet) would be "vnimaniye."

Patriicia

I am glad you guys get to know what happened and how much of a disaster this truly was, through this show. I wasnt alive when this happened but I am from Slovakia (Czechoslovakia back then) which borders Ukraine. Slovakia got hit by the radioactive cloud as many European countries did and I can imagine how scary it must have been for everybody. Also I cant imagine what would it be like if those other 3 reactors exploded as well...

TheBookerDeWitt

I dont think Ive ever seen the Geks this stressed so often in a show 😭

TheSauceGuy

I think it should be mentioned that death due to cancer/radiation exposure is not a certainty for many of these people in Pripyat. While some have likely died from this, there are also many survivors. Some of the people who were in the control room are still alive today.

SirCatelot

People need to stop commenting these "fun facts" when it's gonna be revealed at the end of episode 5. Stop spoiling

Scinaps

Posted it in ep1 posting here too. For anyone not afraid of "spoilers", this is one of the best videos compiling news reports, footage and a technical explanation in English. https://youtu.be/Cc-vvhWXL9Q?si=Ot9f64xR0Fh_mHFd

Scinaps

Also, love the growth in Carter's statement at the start!

TheSauceGuy

Well, the way most of my history teachers taught history didn't make it super interesting. It didn't help that almost all of it was US history lol.

Bambina

For around 45:00 mark; “Vnimanie” (or Vnimaniye, not really that important, just a difference in Slavic languages) means “Attention” - the speakers were saying “Attention (…) there’s been an accident at the Chernobyl NPP (…) you’ll be evacuated (…)” that’s the core of it, but also as much as I could understand. My language is similar to Russian, but still I can’t hear and understand all of it

danidelight

Why do you feel the need to put a spoiler comment? They will find this out later in the show. This comment adds nothing to the discussion as of the current episode.

Shadow

Yup exactly. History can be so interesting and getting it thru such an academic filter from uninspiring teachers makes it hard for me to really lock in and understand instead of just doing the bare minimum to get thru it. Learned more about the world from media then I did American education. Stories, themes, myths, and history

Scinaps

At the 7:28 mark you can see the 2 guys who turned the water pipes in the hospital hallway I believe

Patriicia

also I dont think there were any information about what exactly was going on and people must have been scared to death.

Scinaps

The youtube link I posted earlier here (below) has the transcript/translation of the evacuation announcement

Jessica

The details in this are insane , every single shot is important

Jessica

Chernobyl got 19 Emmy nominations and won 10 out of those!! Stellan, jared, Emily (Shcherbina, legasov, & ulana) all got nominations!!!

Ayaulym🇰🇿

Dude it’s so unreal and hilarious to see USSR politicians being called GOAT or rat😂 Shcherbyn probably rolling in his grave

tanko97

the next episodes are so heavy i could not rewatch them…

BipolarKitten

'3.6 roentgen, not great not terrible' ~Dyatlov

Mia Malvik

The potential explosion that could've happened if the heated sand hit the water is a reminder for everyone to not pour water on a grease fire lol. That shit will evaporate and explode

𝓓𝓪𝓷𝓪

This is the translation of that announcement scene (roughly as accurate as possible) “ATTENTION ATTENTION. For the attention of the residents of Pripyat. The City Council informs you that due to the accident at Chernobyl Power Plant in the city of Pripyat the radioactive conditions in the vicinity are deteriorating. The Communist Party, its officials and the armed forces are taking necessary steps to stop it. Nevertheless, with the view to keep people as safe and healthy as possible, the children being top priority, we need to temporarily evacuate the citizens in the nearest towns of Kiev region. For these reasons, starting from 27 April 1986 2pm each apartment block will be able to have a bus at its disposal, supervised by the police and the city officials. It is highly advisable to take your documents, some vital personal belongings and a certain amount of food, just in case, with you. The senior executives of public and industrial facilities of the city have decided on the list of employees needed to stay in Pripyat to maintain these facilities in a good working order. All the houses will be guarded by the police during the evacuation period. Comrades, leaving your residences temporarily please make sure you have turned off the lights, electrical equipment and water and shut the windows. Please keep calm and orderly in the process of this short-term evacuation.”

bondbond53

Guys... tell me you at least knew who Maikhail Gorbachev is before this show or I'm gonna completely lose hope in American education😅 Edit: Nevermind, Carter called Gorbachev that guy at the end of the reaction😭 Edit: Nevermind 2x, at least Cannon recognised him at the end

Duke Howard

Are they dropping GoT episode 9 today?

Michal Kubán

Yup, don't ever underestimate super heated water, it changed the whole world so quickly.

Scinaps

According to one of them they're gonna post 9 and 10 today, let's see if that's true

Jessica

When I watched it I got the translation I don’t know why the guys didn’t…

SirCatelot

Guys, after you finish GOT or whatever show you will watch after Chernobyl(Dark most likely), You absolutely have to watch Band of Brothers.

Kp__

You are so right! Band of Brothers is incredible

Kp__

I need more episodes!!!!!

Seth Aasland

“make sure you give the man as much protection as possible. even then it might not be enough.” “then i’ll do it myself.” +infinite aura

TheSauceGuy

I never learned about him in school lol. If I wasn't interested in history already, I probably wouldn't have known before this show.

Fatipapi

YOO howd i miss this upload 😮 imma save it for tomorrow tho, 23:35 over here now 🥲🥲 girls gotta sleep

Jem de Jager

The helicopter crashed into a metal cable hanging from the crane 🏗️. Helicopter emerged from the smoke, without knowing the crane was there. That’s why the guy says to next time approach from the west.

Brittany (Ultraanimegirl4)

This show is so good but so heavy omg, I'm glad we have Haikyuu to fix my emotional state XD

Jacob Goldsmith

want dark badly but gotta give this show its credit. soo far very captivating

Thomas Strunk

Well, the guy in the helicopter was killed by the radiation. So then the helicopter just drifts without a pilot into the crane and that's why it crashed.

Safety Tina

After watching this mini series for the first time, it definitely made me reconsider having a job where radiation is a workplace hazard. ☣️😂😭Also, reading the book “Radium Girls” helped me understand how radioactive particles affect the human body (mostly ingested in that circumstance). The history of radiation usage is as horrifying as it is fascinating

Michael

They only evacuated after the world found out, and they still lied to the people calling it a short term evacuation. Crazy

Aedan

This show gives me crazy anxiety. It is so well done but I have not been able to rewatch it again.... until now with you all!

Fatipapi

Starting off w an apology 😂 EU gang came for yall lmaooo

slavicandsapphic

listen us americans gotta apologise for our government botching yalls history considering they wont 💀

Fatipapi

Ngl im actually very impressed that yall are remembering everyones names etc. I for sure didnt first watching this 😂

Emily

now I want you guys to watch the cave based on school boys from thailand that got stuck in a cave

Frosty

This show is really great but 3 more weeks of edging for DARK is tough 😭 it’s already been like 2 months since the incident of ‘24

Ameth

I'm so impressed with this particular watching of yall. I like a lot of your content but I'm so happy at these 2 reactions. I guess the appreciation? Of the weight of it all? And that it's not fiction, despite how fictional and otherworldly as you put it, that it seems

Jathen M Nakamura

i love that you guys are reacting to this, one the best mini series I've ever seen for sure.

Griffin

Yeah the craziest part is some of the isotopes we've created in our nuclear testing have half lives of 10s of thousands, 100s of thousands, and even millions of years. They aren't naturally occurring, so it's something that even if humanity dies out, other intelligent life would know we were here long afterwards.

Griffin

Another crazy thing is that because of all the nuclear testing + disasters like Chernobyl, etc, there are isotopes found all over the planet that never existed on the planet before- in the air we breathe, in the food we eat, on everything we touch -- just in very tiny amounts. Scientists have used this to do some really interesting things. We can date almost anything on the planet to *before* nuclear technology and *after*. For instance, it has been used to correctly identify art forgeries, because something painted in the 1700s couldn't possibly have the isotope under the paint on the canvas or mixed in with the paint itself. Similarly, old vintage wines have been tested and verified by checking for post-nuclear isotopes. It's something no one can fake because the traces are everywhere and so small

Griffin

US History education generally cuts off after WWII, or at the very least glosses over everything after 1950. So anything after then is more likely to be known from pop culture than from school. Like I would expect people to recognize Gorbachev's name from the Kennedy Berlin wall speech clip, if anything.

Griffin

Well, they've revealed the *what* but not *how* or *why* yet

Griffin

I agree about people not knowing - absolutely nothing to be ashamed about. If you never learned or barely learned, why would you know it? But I disagree wholeheartedly that it doesn't affect modern US society. This event resulted in huge overhauls in practices and regulations for nuclear energy across the US. It's a huge reason why people in the US are still "scared" to live near nuclear power plants. It's the reason why every terror threat results in huge protections on nuclear facilities. It's a huge reason on why we had protocols on what to do when radiation reached US soil from Fukushima. And many scholars believe it had more of an impact towards the Soviet collapse and ending the Cold War than the Space Race or anything else we ever did. It also created billions in research for treatments for radiation poisoning, etc. And in scientific research, it's created entirely new areas of study. Just cause you don't see or hear about something often doesn't mean it doesn't affect you often.

Griffin

That's roughly three months salary equivalent. Which isn't nothing but... not worth your life

alex anderson

I agree with all those points, but I prefaced it with “general sense”. The average person working a corporate job in business, does not have to worry or understand what happened, the consequences, etc., to get by in life or for their job. However someone like me, who is studying electrical engineering, should understand this events impact on a more scientific level if anything, and anybody wanting to work in a STEM related field, I would say should at least know the bare minimum of what occurred here and what happened after, as it’s an event that should never be repeated again. The only point that you stated that affects the general public’s lives, is the somewhat irrational fear of a plant blowing up if you live near it. However, most people don’t understand and shouldn’t have to understand how nuclear reactors work and operate, so fearing a dangerous outcome from an unknown entity is pretty fair.

Gaboxxy

@Thomas Strunk nah, he wouldn't have been killed that quickly because of radiation, that's not how it works.

Gaboxxy

Is it really spoiling if it's literally an historic event?

Zess

Yep, in all my years of history classes in US we never made it to the end of the curriculum lol world wars were the farthest it'd ever go. The books did cover them though, you just had to be curious and read ahead lol not to great detail by any means.

Kaylee S

I’m so glad yall watched this series, I had no idea till I stalked the patreon out of boredom. I already knew a lot about Chernobyl going into the show but it still teaches you a lot! And mannnnn oh man did they deliver with the cinematography. Some of my favorite art pieces make an appearance in this show, having them hanging in the background is so powerful.

Kite

HEAT mentioned 🗣️🔥
