Completely agree that Mappa doing season 4 was good timing rather than earlier since there’s 1) a time skip 2) location change 3) overall different tone to the storyline so the more doom and gloom coloring and style fits. WIT killed it season 1 -3 and so far Mappa is doing a good job with S4. Especially if you think about how horrid their time restrictions were. like cannon said- if there was any time to change the art style, it would be here, after a timeskip and seeing the world from a new perspective. WITs style was a lot more “pretty” and aesthetically pleasing. everything was super shiny and colorful with thick bold lines. but MAPPA’s feels grittier, more cinematic. theres more lines and details in the faces. the colors are more muted/realistic. it fits the complex and mature story about war, compared to the dark fantasy story of 1-3. some of the changes such as character designs looking different can be explained away as “oh its been four years they just got older.”

This one particular line that Carter said at the end got me like 👀👀 also Reiner is one of my favorite characters in this show (#3) It makes me happy hearing Cannon talk about him and being conflicted about how to feel about him bc it’s part of the reason I love him so much too. I can’t wait for you guys to keep seeing his character this season :)

i love how they obviously want to dislike reiner but he’s just too damn cool and likeable throughout the show and especially season 4. easily my favorite character in the show. he always had a cool big brother vibe but unraveling his development and inner turmoil makes him such an engaging character. seeing him being a role model for the warrior unit kids definitely helps his case too

Ymir felt bad that bertolt reiner and annie has spent 5 years looking for something good to bring home, otherwise they would probably have faced severe punishment for going home emtpy-handed which they would have until ymir turned herself in (returning the jaw titan) she even admitted that she was only alive out of luck and not only that she ate one of their friends so she finally decided to give up her ‘live for herself’ act for that which actually makes sense and is a damn honorable way to go out

As for the dinner scene with Reiner talking to his family, I think it’s complex and layered nature is brilliant. First, we transition into the scene with Gabi’s “BOOM,” a direct parallel to the Marley military officer who yelled the same thing to make the Eldian soldiers with PTSD fall down in the precious scene; a clever juxtaposition to show the cycle of hate and discrimination is being passed down. When Reiner starts talking about his time on Paradis, he opens with calling everyone there a ‘savage and heartless devil,’ yet the best example he could think of to try and continue his act is of Sasha offering to share the potato she took. Then he proceeds to describe normal human behaviors we routinely see in people like our family and friends. His family is shocked to hear them described as regular people and not devils. The window shutters timely break open with the sound of lightning and rain right after his speech, symbolizing that thinking that way in Marley is dangerous as if you’re letting a storm into your house. Gabi asks, “what do you mean there were all sorts of ‘people’ (not devils) there?” But Reiner’s mother appropriately closes the shutters to keep the storm out and reinforces the brainwashed view of them simply being “island devils.” There are two reasons Reiner attempted to talk in a manner like his mother would. The first is to keep up appearances and stay out of danger as we know at the end of the episode that Marley could be listening in to make sure the Warriors behave themselves/don’t rebel. This is also why Reiner initially freaks out at Falco on the train, he warns him to not think like that publicly, but clearly agrees with Falco’s thinking as in the end he says you have to save Gabi from a tragic life. The second reason which breaks my heart is that he simply wants to be able to talk to someone about his immense guilt he feels regarding his friends. Gabi even offers Reiner an out from talking about his time on Paradis by telling her father that his nephew wouldn’t want to talk about that. He could have taken her up on that, but he doesn’t. He WANTS to talk about it in a genuine nature, yet he knows CAN'T as it would endanger his family. This is why we get his imbalanced story of claiming they were island devils but only giving examples of regular people and behaviors. Reiner cares about the friends he made on Paradis but feels overwhelming guilt for his actions causing them so much pain, to the point where we know it literally caused him to have a split personality in order to try and cope with his guilt. Who could possibly understand how he feels? I’m very excited for the next episode, which is one of my favorites that made me appreciate Reiner as one of the best written/personal favorite characters ever!

Season 4 does a great job at showing all the different perspectives of the other characters. I have immense sympathy for the warriors and the Eldians being heavily oppressed and indoctrinated with propaganda. The Marleyans however can go floch themselves

It's horrifying how effective it is to take away people's freedoms, and then make them give life and limb just for the chance to gain a fraction of them back. Although for many Eldians they aren't even that lucky, being forced to give their life and are offered nothing in return, but cannot individually rebel in the slightest because their whole families are essentially hostages. Not to get political but we have a modern day equivalent that shows the reality of this with the impoverished masses in N. Korea. Isolated from the rest of the world, the only information given is state propaganda, and attempting to flee would mean not just forfeiting your own life but your family's lives.

I love MAPPA but not a huge fan of all the CGI that is used. I still prefer Wit Studio but they are both amazing for their own reasons.

CG is utilized in every anime. Rod Reiss Titan and the Colossal were CG for most of Season 3. Did that take you out of those episodes? No. MAPPA's CG is way better and has gotten better with every series/season they produce. There is no way to do the sequences that come later without it.

I wonder whether they have noticed the different colored arm bands for the Eldians. Those that have the power of the nine wear a red band signifying their status as Honorary Marleyans. Their immediate families also wear red arm bands. The warrior candidates wear yellow, the doctors and nurses are wearing a beige color, the ordinary citizens wear grey arm bands. The star is a nine pointed star signifying the power of the nine titans.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as Marleyans are concerned, there are no people with royal blood left in the continent. Remember when the Owl said the last family with royal blood were burned alive for conspiring against Marley? Dina Fritz had royal blood but only Eren Krueger and the restorationists knew it, Marleyans never found out, so it makes sense Zeke is the only one alive who knows he has royal blood, he must be keeping it a secret for some reason.

Hate how you guys arent even giving the dub one go. Seriously, it would get rid of the problem of missing out on scenes due to reading. Instead you could listen to the entire convo while focusing purely 100% on the scene and admire the beautiful style.

It's okay for Eldians to skip the armband while at home. At the Braun family get-together, only Reiner's mom wore the armband, and you could tell she was so proud of her title as Honorary Marleyan. No wonder Reiner was so convinced by Marley's propaganda when he was a kid!
