Gonna watch now. Highly recommend looking into the Japanese movie with the alternate ending. I’m personally not a fan of the way death note ended particularly with replacing L with near who is just crappy L. It’s not as bad as AOT became for me after episode 73 but it’s not great. Really curious to hear your guys’.

Now that you guys have finished the anime, let me tell you the differences between the anime and manga.   Overall the anime stays very faithful to the source material. The two biggest changes it makes are already pretty well known, i.e. the added scenes where L gets Light wet and then rubs him clean, and Light's altered death sequence. I'm pretty on the fence about whether the first actually added anything aside from homoerotic overtone. L's death in the manga feels very sudden (not in a bad way though) while in the anime the foreboding church bells sequence does provide build-up that pays off majorly, though L's comments about how him and Light would soon have to say goodbye, pretty much acknowledging Light was going to kill him, felt pretty out of character for him, and don't even really mesh that well with the following canonical scene where he declares he just has to push a little further to solve the case. On Light's death though, I can only say I'm happy both the manga and anime version exist and I couldn't pick a favorite between the two. The manga's version is identical up to when Mikami commits suicide in the anime. In the manga, he instead rejects Light as a god and finds him pathetic seeing him grovel on the ground for someone to help him kill Near. Light then begs Ryuk to do it, after which Ryuk instead writes Light's name. Light then spends the next 40 in-universe seconds fully realizing he's about to die and frantically repeats he doesn't want to die right up till the end. An added epilogue shows that the world has more or less turned back to normal with Matsuda wondering if they really made the right choice and presenting his theory that Near used the Death Note to control Mikami (as instead of commiting suicide he dies 10 days after the finale in prison) into not noticing that the notebook he had was a fake, which imo makes a lot more sense than the crock of bullshit of Gevanni perfectly copying an entire notebook in a night's time. Aside from those changes, the manga is mostly just better paced in the second half and more stuff is explained. There is also the occasional minor scene that got cut in the anime, or stuff gets presented in a different order (for example, the manga immediately cuts to Naomi Misora mourning Raye Penber before actually showing how Light killed him). Small changes/things: - Light catching himself developing feelings for Misa when she initially impresses her at some point after they just met. It's a short throwaway "I can't get feelings for her because at some point I'll have to kill her" line but it did bring some nuance in their relationship for me. - For anyone wondering what L's final thoughts were, they were basically "I was right. Fuck." - Some rules of the Death Note have far more emphasis placed on them in the manga. One rule in particular stating you can't manipulate someone into killing others/doing something that would cause others to die (suicide bombing, nuclear strike) ends up being very important whereas I can't even remember the rule appearing in the anime. - Light feels far less dumb in the second arc. A particular moment that always bugged me in the anime was how he let fucking Aizawa catch onto him sending messages to Takada and it felt like a clear example of Light slipping up. The manga on the other hand makes very clear he was aware of Aizawa's trick, he just didn't give a fuck. By that point both Light and Near realized that short of absolute proof Light was Kira, i.e. catching him in the act of using the DN, doubts didn't matter. Light was aware Aizawa doubted him and basically didn't care about him knowing he was sending messages because he couldn't prove shit. - The Yotsuba arc and N&M felt way better paced and Near and Mello felt like far better characters than they were in the anime. I actually like Near now. He also didn't pull any screen magic, in the manga he finds Mikami through actual deduction. I'm definitely missing some stuff but this comment is already overly long to the point you might as well have read the entire manga instead of it. I definitely recommend it. TL;DR: Read the manga it's good

Near gave Mello props, but the plan was really all Near. He knew there was one more missing piece left to the puzzle before confronting Light and was already assuming Light was trying to play him with the fake notebook. That's why he told Mello to put Takeda in a situation that neither Light or Mikami could have predicted. That wouldn't effect Light, but that stunt would've definitely effected Mikami. Both Light and Near knew how preemptive and methodical Mikami was and just like how Light used Mikami's traits for his own benefits, Near used them as well to guarantee that there was another notebook. It was a genius plan, but it's sad Mello had to die to execute it

Also no need to worry about Rey or all the innocent people who used the note. Since the afterlife doesn’t exist for humans (the last rule shown in episode 37, the afterlife is Mu (nothingness)) everyone has the same fate no matter what they do.

Honestly, I wasn’t a big fan of the arc after L’s death but the last episode is really great. I personally think Light got what he deserved. In a way though, he did essentially win. Deleted a big percentage of criminals. (For the time being at least because humans…) Team L forever right here 🤷🏾‍♀️

Fan theory is that deathnote users become shinigami after they die. In the movie there’s a little bit of added content where Ryuk is telling the story of Light to a shinigami that has some resemblance of him.

Episode 74 was the tipping point in terms of quality for me in the show. Contrived plot points. Inconsistencies and plot holes. But what really ruined it for me was how the characters were treated (especially Levi) and how the conflicts played out. Everything felt so forced to go into a specific direction that didn’t feel earned for me.

Let me put it this way. Aside from some gripes, I adored about 80 percent of AOT. I’ve only had a real problem with the last 15 episodes. There are some good ideas but the execution is severely flawed for me. The finale might fix things for me but I doubt it.

The thing I can’t get past with the ending of Death note is the fact that they replaced L with Near who is just an L clone but less interesting. Why couldn’t it have been L to take down light? If that had happened, I would have been very satisfied with the ending.

Rest in peace to my husband. Honestly that scene at the end where he's running and passes his old self with the soundtrack 'Death Image' playing always makes me tear up lol. The symbolism is up to each viewer to interpret, but it's almost as if he's trying to run away to the past before he discovered the notebook. I'm team Light all the way, he's my favourite anime character of all time, but I don't think he should have won. I think the conclusion with him losing and having those retrospective moments and seeing the tragedy of the path he took is perfect. In regards to L dying so early, I love his character but I think his death was necessary to up the stakes of the show. It makes sense for the direction of the show to have Light win against such a strong opponent at a pretty early stage in the story. The downside is that L was such a beloved character and they failed to 'make up' for it in the second half, but then the manga did it (way) better. The anime was severely rushed unfortunately. At the same time it would have been super satisfying to see L in Nears place at the very end, but I don't think people should forget that Near only won because of the work L had done before him. If Near had started from scratch with no info about Shinigami etc. I don't think he would've won

Also, there is a japanese live action trilogy that is really good and has a different ending, a much prefered ending I highly recommend checking it out if you can (not talking about the americam adaptation)

Sorry. Long comment. Levi’s injury was the catalyst for me. So contrived. Unnecessary. A common counter argument I’ve seen is that he needed to be nerfed and scarred in order for the story to progress but many different options could have been done to work with his strength. You do this by being creative. We managed to have a fully powered Levi (for the most part) throughout the series and it was still incredible. He did get hurt but it was never permanent. Another way you could’ve done that scenario differently is Temporarily injuring him or having him diffuse the thunder spear and use it as a bluff but it still caused a small explosion that knocked him out but didn’t injure or scar him because of his Ackerman abilities. That could have been an option for example. Levi’s true struggle was always internal. Rarely physical. He had to keep going and pushing himself after constantly losing everything and that’s one of the reasons why he’s so compelling. But when you go too far with that, it’s just frustrating. I think those injuries and his scars were really antithetical to his character. Levi’s character is that he’s the strongest human alive but as a result he gets to watch everyone else die. He’s genuinely trying to save humanity. He’s been fighting for humanity and his comrades since the series started. And there is that amazing scene in the forest when Levi is contemplating his efforts in helping Eren throughout the series and how he thought he was the key to humanity’s brighter future. Levi’s efforts don’t just revolve around fulfilling his promise to Erwin. That’s definitely important. But he also truly cares about the betterment of humanity and his comrades. People who hide their feelings tend to feel the most. And again there’s a certain point where if you keep repeating depressing plot points over and over again especially revolving around Levi’s character, then it goes from being tragic to instead being frustrating, annoying, and angering and Levi’s injury was the tipping point for me. He had been through so much already. Just Right before that fight with zeke in the forest there was that amazing scene when Levi accepts he has to kill the titans around him who used to be his comrades. But even after all that, he still gets critically injured and scarred. Plus it also annoys me personally when I rewatch those incredible scenes with Levi prior to his injury knowing that there is this air of frustration because of the fact that he can’t do these things anymore within a couple of years. That feeling you get knowing Levi will be ok in a fight and that fear he brings to his enemies is gone. That excitement is lost. Levi was recognized in battle because of how powerful he is. That excitement is gone now. I don’t want him to die either for the same reasons I mentioned as to why he shouldn’t have been injured. Death is not liberation from one’s existence. It would’ve been more compelling if despite all this he still kept pushing forward like he had been doing all this time. But excluding that, off the top of my head, gabi’s redemption felt forced. Why did Falco eat Porco while he was ordered by Zeke to eat Reiner? You could argue eren made it happen but creating headcanon to explain plot holes is not a sign of something that is properly thought out and written. Eren’s motivations for starting The rumbling makes no sense because it would destroy the world’s ecosystem by creating rampant disease from corpses and a lack of a sustainable environment when the colossals trampled everything. The reveal that eren made his dad kill the reiss family was cool. Again, I think they’re a lot of solid ideas after episode 73 but the context and the execution around them really ruined it for me. Ymir fritz motivations make no sense. Her being in love with the original king fritz makes no sense. If she lost the will to live and let herself die as way of escape than that contradicts the idea that she was in love with Fritz. Why wouldn’t she continue to serve him? People bring up Stockholm syndrome as a counter argument but with that condition , hostages or abuse victims bond with captors and abusers and this connection develops over time. Fritz never treated her well. She had fear from her surroundings and disconnect from herself. She was never a hostage. She could’ve squished king fritz anytime with the Titan power. That’s not Stockholm syndrome. Plus how exactly can shifters die? It’s very unclear to me. Reiner and Annie especially were forgiven way too easily. It should’ve been more of a reluctant alliance. Jean was in the right. Armin being commander felt like Isayama was forcing it to go in this direction. Many characters in AOT say Armin is smart but it’s been proven he’s not a good leader especially in Shiganshina. He’s too hesitant and impulsive at the same time and he doesn’t have enough of an instinct and doesn’t know how to utilize his comrades as a team. Levi is a great and better leader than Armin. I’m not saying I want Levi to become commander. Definitely not that. I would rather have Armin be commander instead of Levi because that role doesn’t fit with Levi. But I do think Levi is a better leader than Armin. But I think the person that should have become commander is Jean. He’s proven to be a better leader especially during the battle of shiganshina. He might not be as intelligent as Armin but he knows how to utilize his comrades strengths and can act fast. Hange’s death was tragic but narratively satisfying and the moment where Levi tells her to give her heart is beautiful on paper but with context and Levi’s injuries and scars, it’s just frustrating. You could have a scene where Levi volunteers to stay behind and fight off the colossals but hange tells him no because they need him in the big battle. I’m just spitballing. Falco being able to fly makes no sense. They try to suggest that he can because of zeke’s spinal fluid but that doesn’t make sense. No shifter should have two full abilities of a very different Titan. Annie had small properties I guess. Falco has the powers of the jaw and beast titans but Zeke is still alive. Doesn’t make sense. This one I can understand the opposing view and it doesn’t bother me as much as the other points I brought up but Mikasa’s motivations and allegiance/non allegiance didn’t make much sense. If anything I felt like she should’ve been a yaegerist. She’s been a yaegarist longer than anyone in terms of being a supporter of Eren. If I’m missing or forgetting something in my criticisms, please let me know

The second arc felt a lot like the last 2 seasons of game of thrones minus the finale. Things started getting rushed and stopped making much sense in a show that had immaculate pacing previously. Though this was definitely better than the way GOT ended

Also, please spare a thought to how badly death note handled women despite all of its virtues. They were always an extension of a man doing something(Light's mother and sister, Raye's fiancee, L's and Near's agents..). Misa and Takada are awful characters that existed to serve and worship Light, and had no personality besides that. I love the show, but it definitely doesn't pass the bechdel test to say the least.

I don’t disagree, but the Bechdel test shouldn’t really be used as a standard for much. One movie can be misogynistic and sexist and still pass it, while another movie can embody feminist themes and be woman centered and still won’t pass it (Alien 3).

Good stuff, I enjoyed all your reactions. If I may make a suggestion, I hope you guys consider watching Monster as well. It's another classic from the 2000s as DN. It has a really good story and amazing cast, and seems like would be right up your alley as well considering you also enjoyed AoT and VS. Also, Code Geass is another good one to look out for.

That's what I said. they will neither go to hell or heaven. In movies and shows people dying and going to heaven is portrayed by going up the stairs, in his case he died on the middle of it so he didn't continue his way to heaven basically.

think you guys may have seen it based on the scene of the shinigami realm you found on your phone at the end there but incase you didn't there are added scenes in the recap movies for the series Death Note Relight 1 and 2 They're short but very interesting and leave a lot of room for theory crafting
