Comment about Tom’s valid disgust of the mochi he has tried: what he tried is called Ice Cream Mochi which is readily available in American but bears no resemblance to Japaneses Mochi. Mochi is a summer treat of dough made from pounded rice, one of the most traditional fillings is red/white bean paste wrapped in soft fresh mochi dough. Fresh mochi has a texture similar to warm marshmallow, nothing like ice cream mochi’s hard leather texture. On a personal note, I don’t like bean pastes because they have a similar texture to dry refried beans which really messes with my head. Finding a good Japanese sweets shop in American is not easy. https://jsweetsstore.com Here is the website to a retail Japanese sweets import company where they import Mochi Cream, which is a mousse filled mochi and comes in many fruity, floral, or traditional chocolate/vanilla flavors. If you’re interested in giving mochi a fair shake, they have a location in Chicago. This is still not traditional mochi but it’s far closer to real mochi than whatever Tom had.
