Hi Everyone,

We are doing our book club poll and starting the new book this week. Poll ends Tuesday - so vote early. We took a look at the suggestions and the email suggestions and came up with this list.

My youngest brother is a literal fascist. I have cut him out of my life. I would love to listen to a reading of arguing with racist. I cannot change him but at least I can try here in KY.

Heathen Cafe

Wish we had ranked choice voting here!

I would love to hear Tom tackle the Boys Will Be Boys book after hearing his notes to his boys and his thoughts on Dear Old Dads.

Jeannie and a bottle

I'm really confused with the choices here. It seems that most people (so far) want to tackle racism, but with that vote split 3 ways the less desired topic will win--one of the two books with hardly any reviews at all. White Fragility has been on my list for a while and I really hope this widely acclaimed book is chosen.

How to argue with a racist is available on Hoopla (a slightly common app public libraries use to loan books) as an audio book. Im really up for all of these though. The first two I think will challenge my thinking.

I know it seems hopeless, but it's not. IME, people can be intractable, but are rarely completely unreachable. Any job is easier when you have the right tools, even changing minds, and we have been using the wrong tools since before the dawn of the internet. Now we have new effective tools that didn't exist 20 years ago. I am talking about such tools as Deep Canvassing, and Attitude Inoculation. Podcaster David McRaney has a new book called How Minds Change that introduces those and other tools, or you can just google them individually.

I am not familiar with the book in the poll, but it might be a usefull suplement if it doesn't use methods that cause the Backfire Effect. Please don't give up. If we give up on our friends and families, our numbers will shrink and their numbers will grow. That should scare you, I know it scares me.
