I love this anime, 1 episode and an open mind for alternative animation technique is all it takes. One thing the translation got wrong is when Smile responds to Wong he said something like it will end in defeat and Kong responds "whose defeat?" In Japanese you often imply the subject but specially when talking about yourself. So Smile definitely meant that he would lose, but Kong thinks so highly of him that he thinks Smile might be implying that Kong would lose

And so we start a new sports anime! How exciting! I'll be honest, I've been aware of Ping-Pong for a couple of years now, probably since I started watching anime back in 2021, but I was never really interested because, well, I thought the style looked ugly *grimaces* So, seeing that it was the next sport anime slotted on the channel, I saw it as an opportunity to finally pick it up and give it a try and, well, I actually don't mind the style XD I love what you said about the artistic choice of it, and it made me appreciate it a lot more. Ping-Pong is not a sport I know much about. I mean, there was this one time some professional players came to my town, and that was pretty cool; I thought Ping-Pong was a lot of fun and quite liked, but I'm not a sports-y person in any way, shape, or form. So, getting to have some more exposure to it from this show will be a ton of fun. Oh boy, hearing Chinese in the middle of the episode messed with my mind XD It was super cool, of course, but it will take me a while to get used to both languages being spoken at once. The set-up for these characters is so well done in this first episode, I'm actually a little impressed. You have such a clear understanding of whom each of them is and their intentions, even when you don't have all the pieces yet, and they are all so deeply relatable and fascinating; I find it as a nice change of pace from all the mystery-filled shows I watch on a daily. Smile is going to be so fun to see develop. Seeing him grow to love the sport more genuinely, that'll feel a little like March, but seeing him acknowledge his potential and realize it, even though it's not a quite perfect parallel, well, it reminds me of Tsukishima, and the VA doesn't help my brain to not make the connection. Even though I already like pretty much everything about this show, I think that Peco and Smile's friendship is going to steal my heart and be my favorite part of this show. They have some growing to do in that regard, both of them, being more honest with each other and accepting the truths that'll reveal, but I'm sure they'll be stronger and closer for it. P.S. If there is something that I have really liked about following along your sports anime journey, aside from just enjoying every second of the reactions and reviews, is that I've gotten to try some shows that I wouldn't have otherwise and that I've ended up enjoying a lot; so, thank you, for exposing me to them <3

This show is incredible. It feels like a good novel. One thing I'd say you should pay extra attention to is the incredible music. Some of my favorite songs in all of anime. Really worth just listening through some of the tracks after finishing the show.

Yes, honestly, it took me an episode or two to get into it, but once I have, the animation style fits it to a "T" and I really enjoy it! Ahhhh, that's interesting with the translation note as well! Thank you for the comment and saying that - Kong definitely puts Smile up on a high pedestal and I really love these characters so far!

Right?! Super excited to start a new series! This series has been on the polls for a while now, so I’m glad to finally get to it! I will admit, the animation took me an episode or two to “get into it” but I think it really works for the “energy” of the series, the more I watch! I agree, I don’t know much about this sport but it’s (as per sports anime usual) already making me realize what an amount of work it is! I’m used to hearing Chinese from Link Click, but yeah, it did mess with me! I kind of enjoy it, though! And yes, the characters are so well-set-up and make me want to know more about them! Especially with Smile and our diva, Kong! Smile DEFINITELY is giving off Tsukishima vibes! And I want to see more develop between him and Peco for us!
