Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 19 of Vinland Saga!  WOW you guys, first off I'm so glad I watched 18.5, because it really does tie in an awful lot of the themes that come later on in this ep!  Dang it guys, Snake knows exactly what's going on here and he's going in anyway.  Ketil's all of a sudden not so pacifist but definitely doesn't know what he's up against either.  Thorfinn's watching on in horror, Olmar's quaking in his boots, Thorgil is along for the ride lol, and Arnheid......!!!!!  Guys, they're for sure doing a spirit-carria-ge-ride thing with her, aren't they?!  :(((((((((((  Can't wait for what's next, but I'm scared!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Back to Arnheid, though... I've almost cried. (Oh. That's why it also made me think of the stuff above. But even sadder.)

You're kidding about Kakyoin's flashback, what!!!!!!!!!! I've been hearing more and more that several big emotional scenes in both Jojo and VS are anime only, which just blows my mind. What was that editor thinking?! I've heard of that game and it sounds amazing, but I was warned it has spoilers all the way up to Part 8 :((((((((( Hope you're enjoying it though!!! I reacted to the Rohan OVAs, they're tagged under Jojo here on Patreon if you wanna watch my reactions! Wasn't this just heartbreaking??? I agree!!

This is an incredible episode. But first I really enjoyed your thoughts at the start of this video with insight from the comments. I legitimately think there is genuine kindness within Ketil but unfortunately the niceness that benefits him, fear and now anger are the more dominant part of him. I’m glad you talked more about niceness versus kindness when you weren’t able to completely do so last time. The merchandising thing is a good point from that one comment it’s an unfortunate thing. Although I for one would definitely buy a figure/model of Thorfinn. I think this extra scene was probably completely finished & they just couldn’t fit it in episode 18 or 19 and so they decided to just post it on YouTube. I love how this short very much reflects the attitudes of the Vikings with the philosophy of strength & violence being the most important. I like how this short flows right into the episode and I agree it’s great how It connects to stuff later on in the episode. Don’t worry I got the impression you were doing your best to understand the complex situation last episode. Yeah this entire scene with Keith & the crowd is all the people just pumping each other up which makes a lot of sense with the Norse culture where so much importance is placed on strength, honor where so much pride is commonplace. Fox talking about how inexperienced so many of these people are when it comes to fighting really paints a bleak picture of what’s to come. I like how this part also shows more of Thoigil’s cunning with withholding information until it was most useful. It’s interesting how this part shows the more manipulative side of Ketil with the way he uses their debts as leverage to get these people to help him. I find characters with so many sides like him really intriguing to think about even if I don’t like them as people. I love how this scene starts at night representing how dark the stuff being discussed are but the best part is how Dawn breaks when it transitions to Thorfinn watching this with a look of intense sadness at the state of the world with this kind of violent thinking. The look Snake gives him is hard to decipher but I think maybe it’s understanding of who Thorfinn is. It’s still hard to see Arnheid in this bad of a state especially when even someone with some medical knowledge can only wait and see if things get better. Since you asked I’m pretty sure when it comes to someone this badly injured in this time most of what you can do is limited treatment wise. I love Thorfinn being at a place at this point in the story to realize how thankful he is for how much love & dedication/determination/perseverance Leif showed in never giving up on him no matter how long it took/what happened. I love that Leif brings up Thorfinn’s face looking better probably because he is more at peace not only because it’s heartfelt but also its similar to things Einar has said. And I agree with you he definitely sees Thors in Thorfinn. I have a lot of respect for both of them not being willing to leave a friend in need behind. I agree it’s a big encapsulation of the situation with this one guy shooting an arrow and not even coming close to the Kings ships followed by the king’s skilled archers destroying the small group of people at the beach. I like how we can already see how regimented these soldiers are with they land on the beach. The king’s demands are lenient & merciful for this time because he could just say kill them and make sense with Canute truly wanting as little bloodshed as possible. Ketil’s anger is understandable because while he has done wrong himself he is being so deeply wronged here. And then we get to see the arrogance/cockiness of people once Thorgil tells them the number of men the king has. It’s hilarious that he has no illusions about how badly this will go he just relishes the idea of an almost impossible sounding fight. Fox’s reaction to the caliber of soldiers they are up against is comical indeed with the realization that they are boned LOL especially the open eyes thing because his eyes are almost always narrowed. I love this back story part of this episode for Snake with how much the real iron fist meant to him having actually known him as well as the truth about the Ketil we have come to know because while he was helped by Ketil his personal code as many have called it won’t allow him not to repay him even now. You having to pause at the revelation of the truth of the iron fist is fair LMAO it’s pretty absurd. The moment of all of Snake’s men following right behind him into battle is powerful it looks like his extremely respectful code has rubbed off on even the worst of his men which I think shows how much character Snake has. It’s also nice to see the bond he has with his ramshackle family. I am honestly terrified of Thorgil’s intelligence with this devious plan of his to use the poor farmers as a sacrificial distraction because his intelligence really backs up his immense strength. Also Olmar is not doing well I feel bad for him. I had a lot of relief that Thorfinn, Einar & Leif’s group were getting out of there with Arnheid. Although Pater being part of this fight was worrying. I think we all knew what the show was doing when we saw Arnheid wake up for her own carriage journey. I have my own personal beliefs when it comes to religion/spirituality but I can appreciate how this show handles spiritual concepts like this journey to heaven as this carriage ride symbolically seems to represent. I think there is something so moving about the fact that in some way Arnheid is able to be with her family again even if all of them being dead especially the kids which is what I thought was being implied at this point is a gut punch. I think there is so much great metaphor & symbolism in this scene. I love how the dark forest is representative of the cruel & violent world as well as the suffering they have gone through. I love the symbolism of the wolf & buck representing Thorfinn & Einar respectively because they are represented by strong animals & I’m sure she saw them as strong and dependable. I think it’s very heartwarming that she wants to have the chance to thank our boys before she moves on to a better place. I think it’s fitting to go from this really spiritual conversation to all out bloodshed which is very graphic but I constantly appreciate that this show is very upfront with the graphic nature of battle and the animation complements that. It’s insane that Thorgil is able to swim with what’s basically a hunk of metal on his back. He is crazy for this sneak attack plan. I think it’s really interesting that Olmar says he can’t be like his brother after wanting to be like that for so long he has begun to realize he is not cut out for the mindset of a warrior. What you talked about when it comes to Snake during your thoughts after the episode is definitely what makes him so interesting. I like that you try your best to talk about the good parts about Ketil. Because like a lot of characters in this show he’s not evil but not completely good either although some characters get closer to good or evil. Once again the music was incredible especially the simple but powerful small vocalizations that represented the spiritual & emotional aspect of the scene of Arnheid and her family. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Thank you so much for your comment and sorry again for not getting back to you sooner!!! I'm gonna make this one shorter too just so that I can fully read through more of your comments. I got a lot out of what you wrote here - couldn't agree more about Vinland Saga merch, and I'm glad you enjoyed my discussions about Ketil and the kind of layered character he is. So true that they don't really do "good" or "bad" in their extremes on this show. There's so much to take into consideration with Canute's actions because you're right that in a way he's showing more mercy than he has to. Also the Ketil backstory just made me laugh and laugh lol, like the absurdity of it! So true that it's heartbreaking about Arnheid but sort of comforting to know she's at peace and with her family. Poor Olmar! So glad you enjoyed my reaction, thank you again for your kindness and support!!!
