Ok guys! It’s a thing, let’s do it! Please let me preface this with this is only the first of many polls, there will be one a month and many more war movies will be polled. These are ones that have been on my short list, that “i think“ arent going to start us off too heavy.

Just one pick per person this time. Ends Wednesday at midnight

Comments

nick bell

Tough decision. Good choices

Jon Johns

Great list! Fantastic variety!

Peter MacColeman

I wouldn’t consider Das Boot light viewing

Jonny Kerr (JK)

Good morning Greco Turkish War of 1897!!

Allboroking

Das Boot is not light viewing but it is one of the best German movies ever made.

Eric Wallace

Das boot is definitely not light viewing.

S Childs

I voted Memphis Belle just because I believe that is the "tamest" of the movies with a feel good ending. You probably would enjoy it the most. But Das Boot would be MY choice.

_tragicmike

Good Morning Vietnam (1897): This is the movie that started Hollywood! Very prophetic, too! haha

Ulf Jerlström

Goooood Mooooooooooorning vietnam! so many good ones but vietnam is a classic must watch

David Nesbit

Eventually you should watch all of these. Not any bad choices

Tyler Foster

There are two different versions of Das Boot as a film. The most common one is the director's cut, which would be one of the longest movies for the channel at 208 minutes. There is a shorter theatrical cut but it is much harder to find, and, if I remember correctly, not available to watch online at all. (There's also an even longer third version that turns it into a whole miniseries!) Just FYI.

Adam Doyle

Great list...I voted for Crimson Tide, but Memphis Belle is great and not even close to getting enough love.

Robert da Spruce

Tough one. I think I’m going with Crimson Tide.

Michael Johnson

I really REALLY hope that "All quiet on the Western Front (2022) is on your list somewhere. Definitely very heavy and not one to start with, but I hope it's on your radar

Kristin D

Same, I think they would enjoy this the most. It's a great movie, good story, good acting.

Kristin D

Voted for Memphis Belle, because I think it's the one Cassie would enjoy the most.

Rosanne Stewart

I voted Memphis Belle. I had it on VHS once upon a time and practically wore out the tape.

Brian's Dog

Memphis Belle enjoyer here.

Todzilla

Platoon? First Blood? I just voted for Crimson Tide.

Mark Schamber

C'mon, she HAS to see the great Robin Williams in "Good Morning Vietnam"!

Simon Haynes

Good Morning Vietnam from '1897' was a film way ahead of it's time...

Andrew Ramos

I'll wait for Platoon to vote

Tim Raths

Gooooood morning Vietnam!

John G

There's an Academy award winning black-and-white war movie called "Sergeant York." It's got everything to love about a movie in it and it's a true story of the most decorated World War I veteran in the United States Army

Gábor Árki

Das Boot is not a light viewing but is very good, and it would be nice to return to a European movie. Last one was Amélie I think, more than a year ago. I recommend the Director's Cut or maybe even the miniseries version. It was shot in a way to produce both a movie version and a miniseries for a German television network. The theatrical cut released in 1981 is 149 minutes long. The director’s cut is 208 minutes long and was released in 1997 (although this was more or less the first, unreleased cut of the director). The main difference between the two versions is that the DC includes a lot more scenes that develop the characters’ personalities and emotions, which have been previously only available in the 308-minutes long miniseries version.

Julie

Crimson Tide gets my vote, I’ve been asking for this one for ages. Good Morning, Memphis, and Courage are also movies I think she would enjoy

Dustin Denner

"Kelly's Heroes," "The Enemy Below," "In Harms Way," "Run Silent, Run Deep," "Midway" (both 1976 and 2019 versions), "Tora, Tora Tora," and "Operation Petticoat"

James UK

Good list to start with. No losers here.

Dan Waller

Patton (1970) at almost 3 hours is probably too long.

Gabriela Popescu

Saving private Ryan, 1917, Schindler’s list, Life is Beautiful (all heavier but amazing)

Mike LL

It started Hollywood, after all. That's what I hear.

Matt Rose

WHERE EAGLES DARE

Dan Waller

A Bridge too Far (1977) also 3 hours.

AC5555

You have to see Das Boot

John McGoldrick

Das Boot is the only movie I haven't seen, all the rest are brilliant, especially Crimson Tide, love it, and Denzel as well as Gene Hackman were both great in it. I love Denzel Washington, seen a lot of his movies, especially older ones, like Ricochet, and Deja Vu is another brilliant movie.

Mike LL

I would love to see Sergeant York (1941) on a future poll. It is based on a true story and a very entertaining film.

Dan Waller

Midway (1976) at just over 2 hours would be a good one.

David Freese

She's seen 1917 and Saving Pvt Ryan they were like within the first 10 videos she post in 2021. Also Schindler's List is on the channel.

James1035

I picked Crimson Tide even though I would say it’s more thriller than war movie. Crimson Tide and Behind Enemy Lines are the only two I’ve seen on here.

Shanwyn Nightfox

Looks like Das Boot is not gonna make it. Too bad, americans don't know what they miss. Too this day I haven't seen another movie like it

Henry Fitzgerald

I really ought to see Das Boot. I've seen the set, which still exists in Bavaria Studios, Munich: amazingly tiny! Hard to walk through and even harder to imagine schlepping a 35mm camera through

Tara

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM!!! Robin Williams is fantastic.

Gábor Árki

She has already reacted to the first 3, and seen Life is Beautiful before the channel (according to Letterboxd)

David Freese

Hopefully Dirty Dozen is in the poll in the future.

jdj830

Das Boot is the best film here but it’s the very definition of “heavy”. I like Good Morning Vietnam for a war comedy. If you’re going to see a foreign war film, Kurosawa’s Ran is amazing. A great older war film is Kubrick’s Paths of Glory. And for war comedies check out Duck Soup and Dr. Strangelove.

David Freese

Remember this is only the first poll of many. I'm sure both those movies will be on a poll soon.

Glen Childs

Absolutely, a star studded cast as well as one of the better movies I've ever seen

Glen Childs

Kelly's Heroes, one of Clint Eastwood's best war pics

Pickupthepieces76

Das Boot is certainly the best out of the choices, although all movies are worth watching. However I'm dyin' to see Cassie react to Good Morning Vietnam. That would be a great reaction with a laugh and a tear. And probably the best start to this venture. Das Boot should be viewed at some point though.

Dan Waller

M*A*S*H and Catch-22 (both 1970) are both must see, but she would LOVE Zulu (1964)

adam howard

Definitely go with the 1897 edition of Good Morning Vietnam.

Roger Wayne Alms

The two I would pick have the lowest votes. I think the acting in Courage Under Fire is excellent and Memphis Belle is based on a true event.

Paul Ark

Wow, I almost never see people mention or react to Memphis Belle. That one is an underrated classic. Based on true events, and many actors that you’ll recognize

Daniel Hofer

I think you would really vibe with the ensemble cast in Memphis belle, one of my favs.

Paul Mellette

Courage Under Fire is incredible. Would have been my 2nd choice. I think our girl will really like Crimson Tide though. Hackman & Denzel... great actors!

Björn Karlsson

Yeah.... it's two versions of Das boot on popcorn request. Which one is it?? C'mon Gabor. You are Eurepean like me 😉. Request a bunch movies from Europe. Run Lola run, Downfall, Let the right one in, Show me love, Sisu, Trollhunter, Nikita etc etc. 🙂🙃

Alan Kobb

In the early running, it's looking good for the Robi Williams classic! I feel a great Popcorn reaction coming. This movie has Cassie-favorite written all over it!

Shawn Kildal

Torn between the 2 Gene Hackman movies. Went with Crimson Tide since it probably has the better chance to win out of the 2

S Childs

Am I the only one who enjoyed the newer Midway despite the heavy CGI?

Shawn Kildal

I thought The Bridge on the River Kwai was on the horizon. Maybe it was wishful thinking

Powers209

Please Add Kelly's Heroes to the list.

glenn harper

Wow...both my top picks are in the lead. That never happens!

glenn harper

Also, for future war movie polls, I'd suggest adding Patton, Heartbreak Ridge, and The Big Red One to the list.

Scott Earhart

Good morning Vietnam is awesome. Plus you get the humor of Robin Williams mixed in with the harsh realities of the Vietnam War.

Luke Godfrey

I’m surprised Good Morning Vietnam is winning. As good as Robin Williams was in it, the movie itself was kind of bah, in my opinion. I really hope Crimson Tide wins. Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington. Need I say more!!!

Scott Earhart

Enemy at the gates is also a great war movie

Stephen Woods

Oh come on, Das Boot is so much better than any of the other options here

Dissonant Bard

Since war movies are becoming a trend, not a bad thing, can we get Joyeux Noel on the calendar for December? This needs to happen

glenn harper

Aboslutely! I like Courage Under Fire more than either of the two I picked (GMV and CT), but I went with those because I think Cassie would like CT a little more and, since she's had a very heavy and dark past few weeks, the humor in GMV would be a nice change of pace.

Larry Darrell

My Top 3 of the list are Crimson Tide, Memphis Belle and Good Morning Vietnam. All Great Casts. All Terrific. Vote goes to Crimson Tide, though. Such a Ride! If I could recommend one film to go on your shortlist, it would be, Battleground (1949). It was influential on Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers.

Björn Karlsson

Same thing with "Let the right one in" in october last year with the "scary poll". Exactly the same situation.

Wu Sha Ling

a personal favorite is jarhead (2005) with jake gyllenhaal and jamie foxx. it is a war movie, but very unconventional. it is very personal and unglamorous. rarely mentioned, i guess unpopular

Jordan Malloy

Crimson Tide is honestly one of my favorite Denzel films. So many great actors in that movie!

Michael Moody

I know I'm old, but I didn't realize just HOW old. I saw Good Morning Vietnam in the theaters. Forgot that it was way back in 1897 though. Daaaannnnggg!!!

ENC SW DV Rush

2 movies about true events havent been on any polls so far - the 2 soldiers who in WW1 & WW2 were the most decorated American soldiers in history - Sergeant York - about Alvin York (WW1 - played by Gary Cooper at the insistence of Alvin York) & "To Hell And Back" about Audie Murphy (WW2 - who also plays himself in the movie). Another great but passed over movie is "The Sand Pebbles" with Steve McQueen about the 1930s conflict in China. None of these are nearly as graphic as any movies made today,... and Sergeant York does take some artistic liberties - but it is based on a real persons true story.

ENC SW DV Rush

Yes it was "even a country",... but it wasnt in a civil war, or had Americans fighting there yet,...

Logan Sandoval

Don't forget Letters From Iwo Jima T.T

Ria Grix

Good morning Vietnam is a powerful movie. I remember seeing it as a teenager at the cinema thinking it was going to be light hearted comedy, and Robin Williams is at his best comically here. But boy he’s also so incredibly powerful too.

Justin (CaptainProton)

I like the mix of films here! To be honest, you cannot go wrong with any of them since they are all excellent in their own right. Curious if the next poll will include the same films with the exception of the winner or if the plan is to mix it up each time. Regardless, I hope you enjoy the winning selection. Your reactions to war films (and miniseries) have certainly resonated with me. You truly show your humanity in these reactions and your unfiltered emotions (even the difficult ones) show how much of an impact these films have on you. I also admire the fact you have chosen to explore more details about events depicted in the historical films you have watched.

KTVindicare

Letters From Iwo Jima or Platoon would be my picks if I had a chance to pick my choices. But of the choices listed here, I like Crimson Tide the most. Great chemistry between Denzel and Gene Hackman.

ENC SW DV Rush

Try moving around on a real WW2 sub,... the new ones are huge in comparison. The USS Pampanito is a museum now in the SF Bay Area. For special groups they used to allow sleep overs. And close by they have the SS Jeremiah O'Brien (whose engine room was used to show the engines of the Titanic - they filmed one engine running, magnified its size and duplicated x4 in CGI to replicate Titanic's engine room.) It has a working triple expansion steam engine. The pistons are exposed while it is working which makes it an interesting engine to see in action. Edit: They also have a WW2 sub in Pearl Harbor as well. The USS Bowfin - close to USS Arizona memorial.

Allboroking

Director’s Cut is most accessible and should be available. Even though it’s long. It’s a great viewing experience. Theatrical cut is hard to find even here in Germany…

Rob in PA

I voted for Good Morning Vietnam because I think Cassie would like it the best and it's a great movie too. Crimson Tide is excellent and I agree that Jarhead, not listed, is worth watching. Not sure exactly why, but Jarhead is a movie I really liked and have watched many times.

Greg S.

Voted for Behind Enemy Lines. No one reacts to it even though it's a decent movie. Saw it in the theaters with a friend when it first came out and it's been sort of a "guilty pleasure" of mine since.

S

I think you’d really like Good Morning Vietnam.

TXW

From here to eternity and battleground are very good classics

Phillip Ribbink

I'm really pulling for Das Boot, if it doesn't win this one. I'll be voting for it again the next time we have a Foreign Film poll.

Happy Hanukkah

It wasn't an independent country in 1897, and if that particular year was peaceful, that would have been a welcome respite. But there were indeed no Americans as such.

Malcolm Slater

I was thinking about Das Boot, but I don't think Cassie could watch 4hr 40min film

Happy Hanukkah

Not the only one, and I agree with "despite." As far as Hollywood movies go, it was a quite full and faithful telling of the story. My only concern is how well someone who is not already fairly familiar with the story will be able to follow.

Jim Williams

Robin Williams is great in Good Morning VN - it has drama and comedy- based on a true story.

Earthwalker

Unfortunately it doesn't Look Like Das Boot ist making it, but I hope to see a reaction to it someday.

David Crabtree

I'd love Behind Enemy Lines to win, it's so good and extremely underrated, and I think would make for a fun reaction.

David Crabtree

Another great one for future consideration would be 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.

Alex Gorell

Good morning Vietnam is my pick but Memphis Bell is probably the one you’d enjoy the most out of all of these. I hope you get to the Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Father and Letters from Iwo Jima. All Quiet on the Western Front on Netflix is phenomenal too but none of these are light movies at all.

Ted Little

I would certainly like to see a reaction to Sergeant York, but I would also like to see reactions to war movies made during or just after the war: Guadalcanal Diary, The Sands of Iwo Jima, So Proudly We Hail, They Were Expendable, etc.

Lazarus Gonzales

Dang, too many comments. So, this will prolly get lost. Anyway, “Courage Under Fire” is head and shoulders above all these other movies! Easily. Not to say the other movies aren’t great. It’s just that “Courage Under Fire” is AMAZING!!!

Christopher Smith

Can "Start The Revolution Without Me" count as a War Movie?

Gábor Árki

That's not correct, the DC is 3h28m (the 6 episodes miniseries version is 5h8m total). She did watch longer movies already, although not as heavy as this.

Chris H

I too prefer the 1897 version of Good morning Vietnam.

Dioskur

"Das Boot" is one of my all time favs. But I happen to be german... so I am somewhat glad it wont win. My heart would break if I see someone watch it and don't understand the subtle things that make it great. I think if your understanding of german isn't perfect, this movier loses a lot. I'd go as far as to say that even most native speakers miss half of what makes it so brilliant.

Chris H

Das Boot is really one of the best war films ever made.

Marc Levesque

These are all good movies but Das Boot is in a class above, a hard film but everybody should see it at least once, no war submarine movie can touch it for it's realism, it gets my vote!

Tyler Foster

I have the theatrical cut on Blu-ray, but it looks like the edition that I own (which was made available as a regular edition or a Steelbook, both seemingly out of print) was the only time the TC was put out on home video in the US.

Ike

Oh gosh, we have get to Memphis Bell one day. Hopefully it stays for the next few War Polls. Harry Connick Jr, Cassie… and Samwise the Brave!

Stick Figure Studios

Best movie on this list is easily DAs BOOT, so naturally it won't win. GOD MORNING VIETNAM is..... fine I guess, but my vote is for CRIMSON TIDE, which is a hella thrilling film and I know Cassie will love it. I also think she should see COURAGE UNDER FIRE, but it's so far behind it has no chance of catching up.

Brandon Gibbs

You know I'm still waiting for Twins and Passenger 57.

Al Swearengen

They predicted that war about 60 years in advance. That's some Nostradamus level foresight.

Odd Thomas

Crimson Tide

Rosario Cicero

Das Boot Das Boot RAH RAH RAH!!!!!

Damon Corrigan

I had to to with Crimson Tide, because it's amazing, but Courage Under Fire would be my #2

Oliver Willkomm

You should definitely watch “Das Boot”. It's the most realistic submarine movie out there. It was the most expensive production at its time.

John Cranberry

Glad Cassie listed a movie from 1897 💁‍♀️

Jason Chirevas

I would have thought CRIMSON TIDE, as the slickest choice, would win this — and that would have been fine — but, nope, we're gonna get GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM, the most banal choice. You guys... I, of course, voted for COURAGE UNDER FIRE, which is better than both of them and has zero chance in this group. I'm not sure we're in a DAS BOOT place here just yet.

Terdell Ferguson

I would vote MIDWAY (2019) if it were available. Since it's not, I instead went with the GREAT Good Morning Vietnam. Despite what some might think, it's maybe the best choice of these, except maybe Memphis Belle. Hard to beat the great Robin Williams delivering in every way though.

Keith Jones

I love “Good Morning” and it’s a good channel film, “Das Boot” is amazing, but a love it or hate it movie for some reason. I picked “Memphis Belle” because a personal favorite and shows a side of WWII that few if any other films have, the strategic bombing war

Terdell Ferguson

That would be my second choice and it's a great one. FYI - Tom Hanks and (I think HBO?) are teaming up again for a series on the 8th Air Force during WWII. Supposed to be coming out "soon"? Anyway, I'm hoping it's not too long a wait and really have been looking forward to it.

Davis

Come on Memphis Bell no one else has reached to it yet that I have been able to find.

Gábor Árki

The movie is there as The Boat (1981), but the miniseries as well as Das Boot (1985). I do already have several European movies requested but most of them don't have much popularity. Das Boot might have been the most highly requested, I think. But I also have some others: - German: Das Leben der Anderen (2006), Good Bye Lenin! (2003) - Swedish: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009), just added Let the Right One In (2008) - French: La Grande Vadrouille (1966), Le gendarme de Saint-Tropez (1964) Also, I'm the lone supporter of arguably the best Hungarian movie: A tanú/The Witness (1969). 🙂 Sadly, having a dedicated European movie poll is not gaining much support or traction. 😥

Rick Williams

Crimson Tide is not actually a war movie. It is a military movie you could say.

Rick Williams

Midway (2019) is a good movie. I would like to Cassie react to it. Robin Williams is amazing in Good Morning Vietnam. Cassie would like it.

Captain Caveman

What about Bridge over the River Kwai : Kellys Heroes : Where Eagles Dare : The Dirty Dozen : The Hanoi Hilton

jdj830

LOVE that film. Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland doing what they were born to do.

jdj830

We're all having fun with the 1897 typo but does anyone else think Cassie should check out some silent films? I think she'd love City Lights.

John Drake

If Cassie is going to watch Das Boot, she should watch it as the original 6 part mini series & in German with subtitles. So much more character development, tension, and realism.

Björn Karlsson

What about...... https://youtu.be/WCxuVg_NlzU

Just Plain Bob

Das Boot is an incredible movie. I have the director’s cut on blu ray but have never seen the miniseries version. Where can I see that and is it available on a physical format?

Björn Karlsson

Yeah... but a poll with European movies will be tricky and "strange" imo. I mean there are so many genres. Lets say: Show me love vs Downfall vs Let the right one in vs Nikita vs Cinema paradiso vs Das boot vs Trollhunter. What a mess 😅 If you havent seen Show me love/Fcuking Åmål (1998) It has become the most requested non-english movie from Europe. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 https://hu.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redv%C3%A1s_%C3%85m%C3%A5l

Thomas Haupt

Das Boot should not be in any poll. This is a must watch. Same for Good Morning Vietnam.

Brian's Dog

Everyone forgets our invasion of Grenada, that's where Heartbreak Ridge shines.

Larry Darrell

This is certainly a Mix-Bag of Films. Not all what I would group together under a blanket labeled “War Movies,” Except for Das Boot & Memphis Belle. Crimson Tide & Behind Enemy Lines, are Suspense/Thrillers set in a Military/Wartime setting. Good Morning Vietnam is a Comedy/Drama in a Wartime setting. Courage Under Fire is an Investigative Drama in a Military Setting. The Best “War Film” on the List is definitely Das Boot, but Cassie mentioned not starting “off too heavy,” so Skip for Now, but for sure later. I’d love for her to watch Memphis Belle. However, with such a Mix-Bag, I’ve got to go with the next “Biggest Bang for my Buck,” the next Most Thrilling Ride on the poll, Crimson Tide.

djKENTO

It’s never been mastered in HD in the US. It’s only 10 bucks on dvd on amazon tho.

sarCC

Sooooo happy to see Crimson Tide on here. It's one of my favorite Denzel movies. Excellent dialogue that you can definitely tell Quentin Tarantino punched up.

Björn Karlsson

Hehehe I have a bunch of swedish movies with one request on my list (mine).😝😅

Jeffrey Spence

I've seen all of these, and Das Boot is the best film on this list by far, but may be a tough watch for Cassie to start with Long, and subtitled (unless our girl has unknown hidden talents and is fluent in German!) I would start with Crimson Tide. Good Morning Vietnam is not a war movie IMHO.

Jeffrey Spence

I also agree with City Lights!! You could make the argument that it is the very first romcom, so a must see for both Cassie and Carly?

Lazarus Gonzales

I need to go back and watch Das Boot. I know it was really good. But, “Courage Under Fire” was just so moving to me. But, to each their own, ya know. Thank u for your input.

Paul Stelter

DAS BOOT is amazing, though there are a dizzying number of versions available, including one that's six hours because they later expanded it into a miniseries. Best bet is probably the 149-minute original theatrical cut, preferably with subtitles (though from what I read English audio is available). Otherwise have to go with CRIMSON TIDE. Can't go wrong with Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington.

Ian Cano

I believe I visited that same movie set in 2004 in Munich. You are right about how small it is. I wonder if it is still there.

Ian Hunter (NewbieInOttawa)

Hi all, I voted for Das Boot as well, great film! Though I've no issues with any of the other choices. I was curious if Platoon had ever been put in a poll? It doesn't look like it's on the 'seen' list. I think she'd like it...well, "like" is perhaps not the correct word for a pretty uncompromising film. I do know she seemed to like Tom Berenger and Charlie Sheen in Major League, and Willem Dafoe in John Wick. Just my 2 toonies (inflation) :)

Brent Petty

Save Courage Under Fire for Memorial Day.

Happy Hanukkah

If we're doing war movies, I will (once again?) nominate Kenneth Branagh's Henry V (1989). Kultshah, people!

Russell Teo

Good morning Vietnam is pure crap

Gilbert Gonzalez

Still trying to push 13 Hours(2016) in there lol would be great for a war movie, it’s one of my favorites and I’d love to see Cassie react to it lol

jdj830

I actually think that Cassie should do a week of Shakespeare movies around his birthday on April 23. A good companion piece for Henry V would be Orson Welles' Chimes at Midnight (aka Falstaff), which tells the story of young Henry V; the two of them are like the Godfather I & II of Shakespeare films. And since she is a Firefly fan she should see Joss Whedon's version of Much Ado About Nothing, but she should also see the Branagh version so she can compare the two versions of the same material. And a third double feature would pair the Joel Coen version of Macbeth that came out a couple of years ago with Kurosawa's Throne of Blood.

Russell Teo

Robin Williams is the problem. Over the top acting. The script even when based on true events and true characters is senseless. The humor has no place in Nam and completely disrespects all the survivors and Vets

OneManReactionFaction

If she does this, Titus most DEFINITELY needs to be on this. Anthony Hopkins as the Father of Rome? Hell yeah.

Michael Gilbrook

I agree with your analysis, Larry! I think there are a lot of much better "war films" that could have been on this list.

Happy Hanukkah

While I would have no objection, a week of Shakespeare movies might be pushing it :-) . I believe I've recommended Much Ado About Nothing (either version) in the past. (While I respect Michael Keaton, I found his portrayal of Dogberry almost baffling. Nathan Fillion's turn was much more to my liking.) (And if we're doing comparisons, we could have the Romeo and Juliet versions by Zeffirelli (which just got a Criterion release) and Baz Lurman (prepare for the outrage!))

Mike LL

It is certainly more of a war movie than Crimson Tide and it is more than just a comedy! People remember the comedy of the first half and forget the drama of the later parts. Robin Williams had a Best Actor nomination from GMV and a Golden Globe win.

Josh Phillips

Bummed not as many people are voting for Memphis Belle. Still a lot great choices though!

Stick Figure Studios

DAS BOOT is easily the best movie up there, so naturally it won't win (after the Roger Moore poll, I've lost all faith in the Patreon community as a whole). I also voted for CRIMSON TIDE, but would have liked to see COURAGE UNDER FIRE win as well.

Ewanbhoy Martin

disappointed that Platoon is not on the list which won the academy award for best picture and best director in 1986 but i understand you want to start off light...:)

jdj830

Titus is indeed a great film, and would have been next on my list. The R&J pairing is an interesting idea though at some point she should also see a Hamlet (I would go with Branagh or Hawke) and a Richard III (Olivier or McKellan).

jdj830

It’s like MASH - that is the TV show, not the movie. (Which reminds me, Cassie needs to see an Altman film. She would love Nashville I think. She also needs to see Five Easy Pieces. But I digress.) Anyway, GMV is fine, but there are much better films she needs to see.

David Collins

Man on Fire is my favorite Denzel movie. Book of Eli is extremely well done as well.

Shawn Raven

Crimson tide is my vote has some of the best actors of our era Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington.

Goff

Das Boot is the best submarine movie ever made.

rakesh

Memphis Belle is a proper WWII movie with an all star cast Matthew Modine, Billy Zane, Sean Astin, John Lithgow, Eric Stoltz hell even Harry Connick Jr jr, Mostly fictional, but based on a true story. Give it some love!

Russell Teo

The only time Robin William is good is when he hardly spoke in Insomnia what was the most underrated Nolan/Pacino/Swank Insomnia. Try to imagine Robin William shooting his mouths off in Saving Private Ryan, 1917, All Quiet on Western Front and imagine what would that have undone

Dan

Too bad I didn't see Tom Hanks, "Greyhound" on the list. Maybe someday.

Russell Teo

Completely agree. Good Morning Vietnam actually don’t even qualify as war genre in my list

Russell Teo

Only greats minds think alike. Watching Robin William in Good Morning Vietnam is like watching Chris Tucker butchering Fifth Element

Dan

I'm guessing you're not a Vietnam vet. I am, and a film that was billed as a COMEDY, even though based on true events, needed a comedic genius to pull it off. Yes, I am a Vietnam vet, who was medi-vaced out and survived. Watching this movie, I NEVER once felt "disrespected." I found it immensely entertaining, both in a sad way, and a hilarious way.

Russell Teo

Try to imagine Robin Williams behaving like Mrs Doubtfire in Saving Private Ryan, 1917, Platoon, All Quiet on Western Front (all years). Imagine Chris Tucker doing an Fifth Element on Silver Lining Playbook

Russell Teo

The only light mood war movie Cassie should consider is Christian Bale’s child actor role is his break out performance in Steven Spielberg’s underrated Empire of the Sun, which was really shot in authentic old beautiful colonial quarters of Shanghai before China joined WTO. The rest of the list apart from Das Boot are just mediocre to above average movies/performances

Larry Darrell

If Robin Williams had been with the guys in Saving Private Ryan, they probably would have been laughing more.

Russell Teo

If comedy is what you are looking for in war movie, look no further than Jack Black in Tropic Thunder

pkleo73

I havnt seen it in ages. It was good. Might have to watch on my own. lol

Duane A Lavely

A quasi-war movie that Cassie & Carly would like is "Air America" with Mel Gibson & Robert Downey, Jr. I got a ride on their airline in a corp. jet from Teague, S. Korea to Tokyo, Japan trying to get back to Viet. Air America is a CIA run airlines used for black ops. Another excellent Mel Gibson war movie is "We Were Soldiers", pretty intense.

Josh Phillips

Same here haha. It’s one of my favorites! Seems like there are very few movies about the 8th Air Force and the heavy bomber groups. The conditions these 20 year olds fought in, is almost unfathomable.

Alan F

classic and some award winners: Tora! Tora! Tora! The Bridge Over the River Kwai The Dirty Dozen The Devil's Brigade The Guns of Navarone The Audie Murphy Story (starring Audie Murphy - most decorated soldier of WWII) The Longest Day

Барри С Каэмер

He was in the same unit as my father in WWII. My dad was a company commander. He was a combat engineer. And saw lots of action in WWII and Korea

David Parnell

This is tough one. For me it was between Crimson Tide & Good Morning Vietnam. Das Boot is classic, but it is in German with English subtitles but I still enjoyed it.

Colin Gutierrez

I went with Memphis Belle because it will cause less crying and Cassie needs a break after Last of Us.

David Parnell

This was a tough choice. But I would go with Good Morning Vietnam. & then Crimson Tide.

Terdell Ferguson

If we're adding foreign films to a list, I would like to submit South Korea's "MY WAY" (2011). Saw this one a few years ago on a whim and wow. Based during WW2, it tells the story of a Korean and Japanese from childhood throughout the war and hard to not rank this as one of my personal greatest war films. Really well done and while it may never make a poll for Cassie, those war movie buffs here should do themselves a favor and give it a shot. I'm not usually into subtitles throughout a film (distracting, etc) but the story overcame even THAT for me. Give it a shot, peeps. If you're a war film fan, you won't regret it. ALSO - Supposed to be based on a real story? But who knows for sure with the way the war tore things apart.

Aaron Mann

It was a decent flick. Although I doubt it would stand a chance over Crimson Tide or Das Boot.

Anthony Oberhauser

Good morning Vietnam is a good movie but Crimson Tide is a lot more exciting and suspenseful. GMV is currently in the lead; must be a lot of Baby Boomers voting.

Russell Teo

He tried too hard. There’s a reason why he was so depressed towards the 2nd half of his inconsequential career

Joe M

I would definitely add Platoon (1986) and All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) to the list.

Just Plain Bob

I remember being very excited to see “Good Morning, Vietnam” when it was released on VHS. My ex-wife and I rented it and were underwhelmed. It wasn’t bad and we didn’t dislike it. It was just…meh. Nothing special but not horrible either. “Das Boot”, though, is one of those movies that demonstrate what cinema is capable of. Just a remarkable movie.

Rob Hanna

Das Boot's so damn good. Is it the subtitles? No actors people know? Inexplicable.

Jon Johns

Tyler! Thanks for this info. You can *always* be counted on for objective knowledge. I appreciate you! (Here, and on Discord!)

S Childs

It was an interesting movie which gave insight into the Destroyer role in WW2. I thought it didn't have a lot of depth though Hanks tried. The Elizabeth Shue love story seemed like an add-on which was quickly show horned into the movie.

Odd Thomas

Take out Robin Williams and Good Morning Vietnam was pretty average tbh

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

For War Movies try the Dirty Dozen, or Where Eagles Dare, (Clint Eastwood) Kelly's Heroes, or the Diary of Anne Frank, there are alot of versions to choose from. Or The Pianist which one for best picture. Which Polanski should have won for Tess or Chinatown.

Craig Russell

You really need to watch the Rambo movies (Sylvester Stallone) and The Expendables movies (Stallone plus many other older famous action stars)

Russell Teo

Apart from Das Boot, none of the movies in the list are even above 8.0 in IMDb rating. I don’t watch crap below 8.0 in IMDb ratings

Aaron Mann

Pretty amazing you're still a patron here, given that a majority of the movies Cassie reacts to are below an 8 rating on iMDB.

Russell Teo

Who says I watch all the movies Cassie & her sister had watched? I am only here for the top movies reaction.

John Cranberry

Do you honestly think IMBD rating is the benchmark for a good movie? I could name 10 great films that have 6 and 7 ratings.

John Cranberry

The Cowboys 7.4 Kramer vs. Kramer 7.8 Class of 1984 6.5 Frequency 7.4 Frenzy 7.4 Copycat 6.6 Con Air 6.9 .... all great movies, and all better than the dark knight and Godfather IMO.

Richard Bourne

Robbin Williams was a great comedian and his death was a tragic loss. I was mixed on this movie. I can't really comment without it being a spoiler.

Marty McGee

Crimson Tide: Denzel Washington & Gene Hackman! I can't remember if you've watched anything else with Denzel but he's got some great ones! The Equalizer, Man on Fire, Flight, also Courage Under Fire (which is highly underrated in my opinion), Training Day, American Gangster, Philadelphia, and the list goes on. He also has one that would be good for scary October movies. Can't remember the name, but he plays a cop trying to track down a demon. It's scary, but not too scary, more suspenseful. This would be a great intro to both him and Gene Hackman if you haven't seen much of him. Still the best Lex Luthor. I think he may be in Behind Enemy Lines too. I like Good Morning Vietnam, but it's not my favorite Robin Williams or one from this list.

Robert Nelson

Crimson Tide is a GREAT movie, BUT I don't consider it a war movie.

sarCC

Almost everything on on imdb is rated 6.9 so sorry to hear you've never seen any movies

Luke Ferrara

I always loved Memphis Belle as a kid.

Aaron Mann

So you spend $10 a month to only watch about 2-3 movies a year from Cassie. Makes perfect sense.

Russell Teo

I on,y subscribe on months where there’s good movies & TV being planned by Cassie. On months after Last Of Us; it’s bye bye Cassie. That means I will spend my $10 on other Patreon who watch quality movies or TV. There’s a reason why Popcorn YouTube and Pattern subscriber are no longer growing. Same reason why her view counts, comments on each video here and UTube is no longer hitting Saving Private Ryan levels. I want to bet Good Morning Vietnam will get <100k views in UT once released. It’s time to move on or end up like 90% of movie reactors elsewhere; defunct

Marc Peterson

Heartbreak Ridge worth it just for the Clint Eastwood performance.

Marc Peterson

Peacetime classic The Great Santini with Robert Duvall as. Marine Fighter pilot and wonderful BlythevDanber as his wife.

Marc Peterson

TBS GETTYSBURG based upon Pulitzer Prize winning novel Michael Sharra’s The Killer Angels. Fabulous cast with Jeff Daniels, Tom Berenger, Martin Sheen and Sam Elliott. Highly recommend…great for 4th of July weekend (7/1-7/3 1863)

Marc Peterson

Gettysburg…where the Union was preserved.

Brent Petty

Fallen is the Halloween movie. Very fun to watch. "Time is on my side. Yes it is!"

Michael Scoggins

I voted for Crimson tide but I think it would be better for Cassie to watch sergeant York. That is a classic

Dean Holt

If your going to do another War movie poll I’d recommended taking out Behind Enemy Lines and replacing it with BAT*21 from 1988. As Behind Enemy Lines is pretty much a remake of BAT*21 both have Gene Hackman in but it’s Hackman. that’s stuck behind enemy lines it also stars Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon.

Dean Holt

As I huge movie fan I just couldn’t do it as I like to make my own opinion and not go on what anyone else has said. And thankfully I do as I would have miss out on so many incredible films like Saw & The Conjuring (horror), Predator, John Wick & True Lies (three of the greatest Action films ever), Edge of Tomorrow, Total Recall & RoboCop (sci-fi), Galaxy Quest, Ghostbusters, Coming to America and Uncle Buck (comedy) also here’s a few other Hunt for Red October, Dirty Harry, Apollo 13, A Few Good Men, Speed, We Were Soldier’s, The Last Samurai, Black Hawk Down, and every movie Denzel Washington has been in is under 8 on IMDB. If I actually spent a bit of time I could easily give you a list of 100 films that are great that are under 8 on IMDB But I’ve also watched quite a few above 8 rating and not been very impressed like Whiplash, Shutter Island, Gone Girl The Exorcist, The Deer Hunter, A Clockwork Orange Lord of the Rings Interstellar, Unforgiven and L.A Confidential. But Back to the Future has a 8.2 but both sequels as 7.8. so because of that you would watch the 1st one but not the other two or the reverse of it the first 3 John Wicks have a rating around 7.6 but 4 has a 8.2. The logic behind how you watch films definitely doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, I actually think you’ve just put it to try and be a bit different.
