What a horrific end to an incredible miniseries! This is definitely must see television, but it is not for the faint of heart.

RTD stated that Frobisher is a descendant of Caecilius, Peter Capaldi's character in The Fires of Pompeii, and his final fate is time straightening itself out from his survival at long last. Of course, the most painful part is everything would have been fine if he'd just waited a few minutes.

I think what makes this story so compelling is the fact that we can readily understand the actions of the government, scrambling to cover themselves at the expense of the population. We've all come to see governments in a more cynical light in recent years. I so enjoyed taking this journey with you on this. Loved your reactions! I really believe this is one of the best sci fi mini series ever put on film and the fact that it wasn't afraid to pull punches by killing off so many beloved characters made it all the more powerful. Thanks for a great week.

Awesome reaction as per. Glad you enjoyed the season. I really consider it one of the best seasons of sci fi ever made. I love the fact that Torchwood exists because children of earth is a concept that you just couldn't do on dr who. That's why having shows running alongside the 'mother ship' that are tilted to slightly different audiences/tones really let you have stories of all different shades. With current day dr who they're starting to reveal plans about having the same format again with shows running alongside dr who in same universe and I'm all for it if we get content like Children of Earth!

My thoughts are short and simple. The acting is amazing. The concept is amazing. The writing is amazing. It's one of the best miniseries of all time. Intense. Heartbreaking. Powerful. Devastating. I think i need a drink. Heh. Glad you enjoyed it. On to more Whoniverse!

Hey! It's me! The silent Patreon! The guy who never comments! But I'm making an exception...This is brilliant television. Near perfection. The acting, The writing. The music. All of it. If you can watch this and not be moved, be angered, be enraged, you'd better check your pulse, because you might be dead. I know a lot of people dislike that they killed Ianto in Day 4, but FROM A WRITER'S PERSPECTIVE, FROM A DRAMA PERSPECTIVE, it HAD to be there! Jack had to feel like events were beyond hope, so out of his hands that when the decision to sacrifice Steven came he felt he had no choice (and he was probably right!) Heartbreaking! Now...about Miracle Day. The main trouble with it is that is has a bigger budget than Children of Earth, and they really play up the global scale, BUT...it's just doesn't hold up to series 3. And they concentrate too much on unpleasant characters and not enough on Gwen, Jack, and Rhys. My opinion, of course.

For the most part, I can pretty much understand every bad decision that was made throughout this series. They were mostly stuck between a rock and a hard place at every turn and had to pick the best of two evils. The only one who was truly evil in all of this (aside from the 456) was the Prime Minister. He is the only person in this entire mini-series whose decisions were entirely driven by self-preservation. Some of them did think selfishly in places, but he was the only one who made every decision that way. Right from the start saying "This conversation never happened." Great reaction!!!. It's a heavy one to get through, and we are so glad you got to experience it the way we did back when it originally aired, watching it consecutively.

You're right about the writing. It would have hit differently if Jack had done what he had without losing Ianto first. It's still so hard to watch, but it would have been completely infuriating otherwise.

casualnerdreactions

Oh man yea. Even as I criticize their choices, there is always that small voice, but they could be right in the sense that it felt like an impossible decision and with no time to really find options. It's an insane story.

Also, I’m my mind the only reason Tosh had to die last season is because she would’ve single handedly taken care of the 456. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it XD

Watching this with you, I've learned it's easier to take on when watching with someone else. I've seen COE 3 times before this and all 3 times I was depressed for like a week after. But finishing this time I feel okay. "Should we memorialise him?" There is a memorial in Cardiff. You can google it "Ianto Jones Shrine" Going strong 15 years after his death. Also seeing Ianto's family. The one thing GDL always wanted was them to show us where Ianto lived. We never see his place haha. How am I going? I live in constant denial. Ianto is alive in a little Welsh town running a coffee shop and is free from Torchwood. Jack comes and visits him on the weekends... But seriously, while I've listened on to the audio dramas and enjoyed them. I feel like 3 was a great "ending" for Torchwood. And to me it is definitely the end of an iteration. We lost so much of our team and we broke Jack. The ONE thing I wish is that they didn't kill Ianto. I feel the show would have gone on stronger if we kept him filling out the original cast a little more in the next season. Also, it's okay to need time to process. This mini series was amazing, hard hitting and really thought provoking. I've seen people criticize it as trying to be "edgy" . I don't think it is edgy at all. I honestly think it is almost realistic. We all know our governments would sell us out. Especially the less fortunate. They already do. I've only watched season 4 once (when it aired in 2011). So I'll be watching it for the second time with you. And I am keen for the new era of Doctor Who with you

Thanks for sharing all your thoughts! I wonder if they would have done anything different here if they KNEW they were getting a 4th season. It’s kind of impossible for it not to be a whole different experience. Excited to see what it’s like in a few weeks.

it's been like 15 years and this series still rips my soul from my body every time lmao. still incredible and relevant sci-fi in 2024

That was worth coming back to Patreon for! I binged it in one afternoon, but I really enjoy series 3 of Torchwood. Season 4 has a different feel, but as long as it ends up fitting into this month, I'll watch the long versions.
