Once again I am stunned by the story being told. This is a brilliant setup, build up, and final reveal. Some familiar faces and a few new one all leading to something that defies my expectation.

After the end of Series 3, RTD was totally open about not having any intended meaning for that bit with the ring, which was just to give future showrunners an opening to bring the Master back if they wanted. But as it turned out, he ended up deciding to close that loop himself in his final story (as well as that tossed-off reference to Queen Elizabeth at the start upon realizing he’d never gotten around to following up on her hating Ten for something he’ll do in his future). And it’s pretty impressive how natural and earned this all feels under the circumstances. Of course, having Wilf as the main companion this time is a real treat, with Bernard Cribbins getting to show a lot more of the dramatic acting skills no one suspected he had after his legendary half-century comedy career. And I would have been more than fine if Timothy Dalton was just here as a random unexplained narrator, but that final twist is even better and was a perfect capper to leave us waiting on for another month.

I was not at all a fan of the master arc in this, but it gave me the wonderful Wilfred / Doctor cafe scene and some ever more wonderful stuff in part 2.

Looks like the Trickster's prophecy of "The Gate" came true!

I love how you lose yourself in the Doctor's world during the episode. The fact that your emotions are definitely toyed with during the story is so cute. There are times I just want to give you a big hug and reassure you that all will be well (even though we know there's a regeneration on the horizon). 😘

Honestly, I'm not sure I'd have been happy if Timothy Dalton had been anything less than The President of the Time Lords.

Every time a reactor gets to this part of the series, I like to point this out: The Doctor saying: NOT BEATEN. NOT BEATEN! in Waters of Mars sounds eerily similar to The Master: NEVER DYING. NEVER DYING! in this episode
