And here's where the show slips into just doing a book each season, though there's still a good bit of added material. And unfortunately one removal that was forced on them, as this is where Havelock finally comes back and plays a major role. But by the time they got here, Jay Hernandez was playing the lead role in the Magnum PI reboot and didn't have any space in his schedule, so he's just gone forever after those first three episodes. Also notable is that Lucia was a male character in the books, and as far as I know they never made any kind of statement on why they changed it, but it's never important to the character's arc anyway so I guess you could just say, why not?

It’s at this point in the show that everyone seems to want to know how Amazon “changed” the show. It’s important to keep in mind that the show (and books) are owned by Alcon Entertainment, which has been responsible for the show’s production since S1.E1. Amazon (and SyFy before it) simply bought the rights to broadcast or stream it, and slap their logo on it. As such, they have minimal impact on the content. Author/writer/producer Ty Frank has said that as they progressed season to season, they learned what they were doing, and feel they got a lot better. He’s also said that the budget remained “essentially the same” year to year. This was the first episode in which they changed the aspect ratio. They (Alcon, not Amazon) did this to reflect the open space on the planet as opposed to being in the cramped confines of a spaceship. Before you ask, the scenes on Ilus/New Terra were filmed in a quarry “a couple of hours” outside of Toronto.

The only real "change" that came from Amazon was letting The Expanse crew use their render farm for the CG. That's why there is a marked improvement on the CG between S3 and here. They could render at much higher fidelity.

The guy you recognize is Burn Gorman and I think you recognize him from Torchwood. Diogo is dead, crushed by an elevator in the last episode of Season 3. And yes the aspect ratio changes whenever they are on Ilus/New-Terra.

New season! New opening! The opening in this season sees the progression of the "story" told by the opening in the previous seasons, as well as being updated with how the system is developing after the creation of the Ring. -In the ISS flyover of Europe, we now see a ship leaving Earth. -The melting of the glaciers over (part of) Greenland is now further along. There is less ice and the land is greener. -The shot of Manhattan is now replaced by a view of the nuke that hit Brazil back in season 3. -The view of the New York City skyline is now more up to date, with a lot of ships flying above. I like to think these are colony ships leaving Earth for the Ring. -In the shot of Mars we now see city lights on the dark side of the planet. -We now get a view of the Mariner valley settlement, with multiple ships above. -We get a view of a Mars Habitat with multiple terraforming towers, and ships leaving for the Ring. -We now have a shot of Saturn's rings, and many colony ships making their way towards the Ring -Followed by a shot of the Ring Gate, with the Sojourner and Edward Israel, as well as other colony ships, approaching it. -Followed by a shot inside the Ring Space with the OPAS Behemoth, now called Medina Station. -A look at the Ilus Gate. -James Holden looking at the Ilus Gate -And the Illus system before the title reveal.

Holden was injecting his cancer med. Remember he was hit with a heavy dose of radiation way back in season 1 and now he has that patch permanently. I never paid much attention to it before, but this time I realized that every member of the Roci caught up with somebody real-time as they were flying by certain locations. Amos with Peaches, Alex with Bobby, and Naomi with Drummer. As for the end credits where it slowly zooms in on the ring, I don't think it's necessary to stay watching it this season.

I would have been thrilled if Havelock could have returned, but alas we move on. It'll be a fun addition when I read the books.

hehe I realized when editing, but dang he is definitely not Owen. It occurred to me after the episode that Diogo could be dead. I just figured wearing the power armor he'd survive the elevator crash.

That's a great detail that everyone got to catch up with someone in real time. I wish Alex's had a better connection though.

Just a quick note... you mentioned wondering where Diogo was, and recall that he died last episode in the elevator shaft chasing Holden, Nagata, and Drummer. Also, about Ilus/New Terra... it continues to show the divisions between the Inners and the Belters. Inners insist on calling it New Terra, a very inner-centric name, and the Belters calling it Ilus, a very outer planets/belter name.

Some other fun aspects of season 4 is that there are nods to early reactors and supporters of the show. For example when Bobbie goes into her brother's apartment another woman walks by her and Bobbie says "See you Rana". Rana is one of the Normies that were early reactors to The Expanse (they started following the show in Season 2 as far as I recall). There are other little tidbits I can point out as the Season unfolds.

It did occur to me later that he might be dead, but I just figured with the power armor he probably survived. At any rate should I call it Illus or New Terra 😅
