The game DOES USE/APPLY Playstation HDR Calibration app settings.

The game has a fairly good HDR implementation by actually applying the system level HDR Calibration app values...but not exactly.

In fact, its Max HDR Luminance will generally be noticeably higher in an unpredictable way compared to anything you've setup there.

For this reason, Dynamic Tone Mapping is suggested.

Moreover the game seems to slightly increase the black levels in HDR, but this can be fixed with the following in-game settings:

  • Set "Screen Brightness" slider to 2 (for fixing the black levels in HDR with DTM: On)
  • Leave UI Brightness to 5 (or decrease it if you think UI elements are too bright for you)

BONUS:

  • Do not use Performance Mode on PS5: as currently it will provide very unstable 60fps (with drops down to 30fps) resulting in very bad stuttering while playing. Even VRR won't fix this on PS5 as the console does not support LFC and will begin to stutter even with VRR when framerate goes below 48fps (which happens often). Also in Performance Mode resolution and textures take a big hit.
  • Use Quality Mode: as, even if 30fps should be avoided on OLEDs, it will still look and play smoother than the unstable and visually downgraded Performance Mode;
  • Reduce Motion Blur from Default 5 to 2: in order to get rid of trailing/ghosting artefacts while still improving motion, especially at 30fps.

Weston Wright

Do we leave default is we don’t have auto tone mapping?

Weston Wright

Sorry, you said set screen brightness to two to fix DTM. But if we are using a 2017 panel would you suggest just leaving it default at 5?

techoptimized

Oh, no, the raised blacks are also with HGIG and DTM: Off. I wrote DTM there just because it was suggested before for this game.

Hmm, If i wanted to use HGIG for accuracy, could I just set the PS5 to 11 clicks ? Supposably that keeps it at ~800 nits. I feel like the game is suppose to have a somewhat subdued look, and DTM might be going against that too much.

Jason Fortuno

I'm confused because if you're using DTM you usually set PS5 HDR Calibration to 25clicks but now I'm hearing it's 11clicks for DTM with FF16... Is this right?

techoptimized

The game seems applying and increasing the system HDR Calibration value in a non-linear way, so if you set it to +11 you would have 800 nits in the first level but 2.000 nits after. It's also overly dark/dim in HGIG compared to calibrated SDR, so it's better stick with DTM for it.

This game looks and feels awful on my oled, had to change to fps mode just to make it playable as 30fps + awful motion blur looks disgusting.

techoptimized

I know, both modes are not ideal on OLEDs at the moment but personally I will always prefer frame consistency over stuttering. The next patch should allow removing or reducing Motion Blur which may also help in this case. Not a good state at the moment.

What brightness did you end up using? Have a b7a and 2 seems too dark

jv

I am on a b7a, with settings tweaked as per your recs. Screen brightness at 2 is very very dark — am I missing something? Thanks for your time

techoptimized

Screen Brightness at 2 should be used with DTM: On...which doesn't work in Game Mode on B7. Try setting it to 4 or 5 on B7

jv

What setting is DTM under? I used color control to unlock the things you recommended in Game Mode, the ones that are usually locked. Is it disabled on Game Mode no matter what? If so, I will change my settings

techoptimized

Dynamic Tone Mapping on 2017 series = Dynamic Resolution: Low, but it doesn't work in Game Mode due to a processing limitation to preserve low input lag. It will work with any other HDR presets but with much higher input lag so I don't recommend it. Use all my suggested settings in the video for gaming on B7 and then just increase the in-game HDR Brightness to your liking.

Has this changed at all with the DLC release?

Ciao Paolo, su G3 che impostazioni consigli? Filmaker + DTM e luminosità a 2?oppure game mode in DTM? Grazie

techoptimized

Graziw

Moxify

I use all of your TV, ps5 settings and DTM on. My brightness is set to default (5) by now but I feel it could be a little too dark sometimes in very dark areas? You suggest 2? Wouldnt that make it even darker? Like it would be impossible to see something? I use your HDR filmakermode, DTM on and video range set to limited.

techoptimized

Yeah, the game has not a great HDR implementation as many areas will look too dark and others too washed out even when using the same setting. 2 should be the most balanced overall but if it's too dark too often for you, leave it default

Moxify

Thanks! I’ll leave this for default but you wouldnt recommend by adjusting it a little higher to for example 6 or 7? It will probably get a little brighter ofcourse but I’m afraid it will make the graphics even worse, washed out, corny, etc

Moxify

Also, Ill stick to performance mode. Should motionblur be set to 2 aswell? :)

techoptimized

Yeah, I wouldn't go over 5 or it may look too washed out in outside areas. Motion Blur 2 is fine also in Performance mode
