The Infamous Failed Pirate

An unsuccessful pirate.

At the start of his career, William Kidd’s future looked bright. Many things went in his favor, among them a smart marriage to a wealthy widow, and when the crew of the ship he served on mutinied against its captain, William Kidd was chosen by popular vote to take his place. As he received a commission to hunt pirates for the colonial government, it seemed that his star was on the rise.

However, misfortune accumulated. Every venture William Kidd and his crew undertook failed, and so the pirate hunter himself became a pirate, believing that England would approve his actions so long as he did nothing which would stoke the king’s ire.

Even here, he failed. No treasure fell into his hands. His crew mutinied several times, an unfortunate incident resulted in the death of his gunner, and just when it seemed his luck had turned around with the capture of the Quedagh Merchant, he was betrayed by his patrons in the English government, put through a mock trial, and executed.

Remembered so famously for the things that went wrong in his life, is it any wonder that William Kidd would seek the Holy Grail to undo his fate?
