Devil of the High Seas

A sailor’s great fear. The devil who collected the lost souls of those who drowned at sea. He is a monster closer to a demon than a Heroic Spirit, a fearsome, alien man whose visage has long since been warped by the myths and the legends surrounding his existence. Because Poseidon originally possessed chthonic attributes, he has even inherited a fragment of Poseidon’s Authority over the seas.

The origin of this Heroic Spirit is unclear and shrouded in mystery. Some believe he is the vengeful ghost of Jonah, consigned to roam the seas for eternity. Some that he is a manifestation of Saint David of Wales. Some believe that he may have been an ordinary, obscure pirate whose name was attached to a growing mythology.

Whatever the case of how he began, the Heroic Spirit that exists now little resembles the base that forms his existence. Because his legend has outgrown his truth, he has been distorted into the devil known as Davy Jones, a fearsome being that preys on the poor unfortunate souls who drown at sea — or alternatively, the gentle hand that guides them to their rest, for those who died at sea were sometimes said to be “safe in Davy Jones’ Locker.”

Fundamentally, the form he takes in this work might be thought of as a combination of the two. Although his appearance is frightening, the purpose of his summoning is to restore the proper course of human history, and so in that sense, he might be considered quite the hero indeed.
