Orochiimaru dedicated his whole life to studying new Jutsu so he could master every jutsu there is. He made experiments using animals and human body cells to develop new techniques no one has ever seen. Thats why he has some nasty techniques that cannot be explained. He is literally a researcher or a jutsu inventor. Thats his life purpose.

Naruto and Sakura might keep saying that they need to save Sasuke, but the fact is someone only needs rescuing if they're in danger---or unaware of the danger they're facing. Sasuke is well aware of why Orochimaru wants to help him get more powerful. While I respect the fact that they're desperate to ge thim back, I can't be blaming Sasuke for them constantly putting their own lives in danger in order to get him back by their side. Sasuke wants to be so powerful, he can defeat his brother and avenge his entire clan. It's been his goal since his brother killed them all. I'm not mad at that. In fact, I wish we could see him more because of that. The only time he "lost the plot" per say, is when he started being comfortable being part of Team 7. His brother showed up to force him to remember what the plot actually was, lmao.

The series is called Naruto, but it has always been the story of Naruto AND Sasuke. We see their story independently and see how they try to achieve their completely different goals. So Sasuke is not an annoying emo side character but the protagonist of the show, and if you think about it sasuke's life is a tragedy, a traumatized kid who as you see in classic was a very cheerful and friendly kid but who fell into darkness and he even wants to give his life to orochimaru as long as he can get his revenge. I think naruto's desperate search for him is very justified, he knows what it's like to be alone and wants to help him especially because someone who can't even protect his friends can't become hokage ;)

Orochimaru said when he fought the 3rd that he mastered the immortality jutsu , he’s doing humans , animals , forbidden jutsus research for a while experimenting random shit and this is how it turns out he’s basically a genius scientist who’s curious about this world and wants to just learn and discover

The reason why Naruto isn't running wild is because it's the nine tails controlling his body when it became 4 tails. It's essentially a wild animal that goes on auto attack unless it doesn't see an enemy. Also he struggles to move around with so much chakra.
