I’m easing myself back into news consumption but it’s hard when headlines trigger a flight response in me.

Gabbard was only a democrat to get elected in Hawai’i. If she ran as a republican in HI, she would never be elected.

I admire your intellectual honesty and pragmatism at being able to say you need to emotionally appeal in order to get people's attention but I personally can't really stomach that considering how much I value facts and reality is it really worth fighting for a country that wants to act on its gut entirely rather than any amount actual rock hard evidence? I'll still play by Society was rules but how can I get invested in a side that wants to take the populous route even if it's the only way to win. When I honestly believe that that's just reinforcing bad behavior. As for your statements on reaching out to these people they didn't find it necessary to do the research to look at an important decision I don't see how giving them any kind of benefit of the doubt is healthy or good for anybody they decided that a vote for the American president was more or less arbitrary and an equal decision. That is so clearly in every way shape and form never been true how u extend a hand to the people that decided an important decision wasn't important enough to learn about the choices they were making

I mean is it rejecting reality to appeal to people's emotional side? I feel like that embraces reality. I would love it if we lived in a world that embraced reason and rejected falsehoods. When we started podcasting we naively thought our podcast would end because people would just understand that scams are scams, fake things are fake, and religion is a tool to control the masses. I don't think people are necessarily uncritical, I think that the other side is lying and manipulating them. I think these people can be reached with more simple messaging and better populist policies. Here is a scenario for the second part of your comment: Imagine a person who lives around a bunch of people who are pro-trump. Let's say rurally. They work 2 jobs, inflation is high, they can't afford a house and rent keeps growing and so do food costs. They come home from work and they just don't want to expend energy to think about things, or watch the news, so they fill their little free time with mindless entertainment. Now the economy in our country did better than a lot of other places in the world post-pandemic. But they personally aren't seeing it. So is that someone we should try to reach with messaging next time? Should I give a person like that the benefit of the doubt? I respect that individuals personally do not want to do the work of reaching out to people, and think they should do whatever is healthy for them. But as a party, the people on the left need to work to fix that person's life and the millions of people in that same situation. They should appeal to that person to get them to easily understand how they will help and if that is emotionally - I think that's fair game. I appreciate this comment that you wrote quite a bit though, and it does give me a perspective I think is very honest. Thanks for writing it.

Thank you for responding I see where you're coming from and I know that I am almost certainly acting out of being fed up having done years of Outreach and explanations both to strangers and family members and it seeming to have made no difference to any of those parties that I interacted with. I do appreciate the fact that you both can pick yourself up and even in the face of this hardship continue to fight with compassion and understanding. Rationality and Atheism needs people like you far more patient than I but I will think about what you said and your example thank you again

How do you emotionally appeal to people who either don't follow news at all, or get "counter-emotionally appealed" to believe the exact opposite of what you're trying to emotionally appeal to? Wouldn't you eventually have to fall back on non-emotional arguments to convince someone - if they're open to be convinced in the first place?

I have a very similar issue elections are incredibly important even before I knew how important I knew that it was at least worth knowing about the candidates and I feel that this election more than any other was people not doing any research at all for something incredibly important even if only to prove you're "hyperbolic" liberal friends wrong. I mean enough has happened that you wouldn't even need to do that much of a Google to find out about a criminal convictions and the impeachments on a very basic level being a felon in my book unless there were some extenuating circumstances would disqualify a person why would I want to convicted Criminal as a president. How do you emotionally appeal to somebody who treated this like a nothing decision who apparently wasn't it all invested in it? Also your take on Scandal and Insanity being something that politicians will take as a sign to not follow him really doesn't hold true as far as evidence suggests as far as evidence suggests there are no consequences for these actions he said and did everything he said and did and still became president the people that supported him are going to gain power there doesn't seem to be any repercussions for his actions he was even charged as a felon and suffered no real ill effects I want to believe that there's still a conscience but I don't see it affecting the politicians that he will be relying on to follow his every move

I just wanted to point out that as the big picture on the election comes into focus, it actually was pretty close. In fact it was a lot closer than it appeared on election night and the day afterwards.

Here is what I’d do if I were advising the Democratic Party. Every single day, after January 21st, have multiple people in front of the camera tell the American people how bad the economy is, no matter what. I’d make sure each person calls it the Trump Recession and/or Trump Unemployment. If a company lays off 10,000 workers talk about it every single day, multiple times per day. I’d even advise typical Trump commentary whereas you say “I spoke with insiders and they think it’s way worse. More to come”. No one can verify it. So in other words we use their playbook. Unemployment ticks up. Talk about it every single day, numerous times per day. “Trump unemployment”. Stock market dips, talk about it several times per day. Make sure you emphasize that your retirement keeps going down because of Trump. Trump means you’ll need to work extra years instead of enjoying retirement. Absolutely use class warfare every single day. We didn’t get tax cuts but billionaires did. If any outbreaks happen, make sure we call it the Trump outbreak every day. But use fear, your kids or parents are sure to die because of Trump.

I’d avoid the minimum wage talk because the average person sees this as “woke” propaganda. They take the view that they make more than minimum wage so they don’t care and others should make these wages because anything above minimum wage means that prices go up. They say things like burger flippers don’t deserve anything above minimum wage because it’s an “entry level high school job”. If you bring in facts about things like: Europeans pay livable wages yet their McDonalds prices are comparable to our prices; or Paying companies minimum wages means we subsidize millionaires and billionaires through section 8 housing, food stamps, etc. So in other words, the responsibility falls to the taxpayers, not the employers who are already insanely wealthy; or Lifting people out of poverty is an investment to the America taxpayer because they pay more back in taxes than we paid to get them out of poverty.

I listened to Skepticrat this morning and CogDis tonight so I’ve had a lot of time to think about why the “campaign on the economy” rubs me the wrong way. I’m trying to give the guys a fair read because I know that they are looking at this with an intersectional lens. But quite simply there are a lot of people who do not. I’m a cis white guy, but I have lots of family and friends who are not. And what they have seen over the last several decades from is empty promises. It’s Nancy Pelosi kneeling in a kente cloth. It’s white lefty bros telling mansplaining economics to them. It’s black women being the first to the polls and the first to be forgotten. Running on the economy and fixing the other stuff later has tended to result in the later not happening. Sorry bit of a rant but I think the guys are really underestimating how much racism and misogyny defines our political character.

I still haven’t sent that email. There’s still votes to be counted and data to be aggregated bc I want to be wrong and I’m trying to make space to be wrong. I spent a whole therapy session and many hours ranting about this. My poor therapist is going through the same shit and told me they’re hearing nothing but post election panic and fear from their clients.

I like how you used the example of a Jets fan, implying there weren’t enough Chicago Bears podcasts to make the scenario believable. 😂
